Unable to open 'Summer Wars' Blu-Ray

Hello all, appreciate the help on this one. Currently running into issues ripping my Summer Wars blu-ray. Seems to use AACS v21, and is so far the only disk I cannot burn. Running Windows 8.1 64bit and MakeMKV v1.9.1 64bit. The error message I receive is pasted below. I can also provide the .tgz dump on request. If more information is needed please let me know.

This would seem to be an issue with Windows 8.1, because the Summer Wars BD opens just fine with v1.9.1 on Win7/64bit. I originally ripped it a couple of years ago with an earlier version, but I pulled the disk out to test it with 1.9.1.

What BD-related software do you have installed? Are you running MakeMKV as an admin user, so that Windows isn't filtering its access to the drive?

I am running as admin. I don't have any real specific blu-ray programs aside from just VLC player. However I was able to rip my blu-ray copies of Lilo and Stitch 1 + 2, Army of Darkness, Big Hero 6, and Evil Dead 2 worked fine.

Only thing I can suggest is sending the TGZ file to mike via svq@makemkv.com for him to check. I'd suspect an error reading part of the disk, but that isn't indicated in your log. Point him at this thread for additional information.

I too could not successfully rip Summer Wars using MakeMKV v1.9.1, nor using DVDFab 9 Ripper. The same error happened as you in Make MKV. DVDFab v9 couldn't get past 24% doing an m2ts passthrough. A reboot didn't solve the problem. After reading though this forum, mike the site admin made a suggestion to a user with an external USB optical drive. He instructed they power cycle the computer & USB drive while leaving the drive connected.

Now, the solution to this problem for me is listed below. I'm using a Mac so I can't promise this will work for you Windows/*nix users.:

1) Shutdown the computer. Wait 8-10 minutes letting all the chips and capacitors to fully de-energize.
2) Now open your case to reveal the delicious innards of your machine. GENTLY remove the SATA data cable AND the SATA power cord from the rear of the optical drive.
4) If you're clumsy, close the case until we're done.
4) Flip the power switch on the PSU. If you don't have a PSU switch, pull the cord or flip your surge protector's switch.
5) Boot into your OS. Clear caches using your favorite software, I used CCleaner and OS X Terminal (RAM purge command: sudo purge). Then using Disk Utility (found in Utilities folder), repaired the permissions of my boot drive. Then clear the caches and RAM again.
6) Shutdown again, wait 5 minutes, then power off using the PSU switch or removing power cable.
7) Restore power to the machine and open the case if you closed it earlier. DO NOT POWER UP.
8) Reconnect your optical drive's data and power cables.
9) Boot up into your OS. If the above worked. If not, try it all again? Or not, who cares. We'll all be dead soon after the race war.
10) Don't forget to close the case.

After I did all this, I was able to resume my evening's ripping session without any other issues or problems. BONUS: MakeMKV now runs the drive in OS Access Mode, previously it was only operating in Direct Access Mode. BIG thanks to mike, the site admin, for without his suggestion, I'd likely still be banging my head against the wall.

My machine is a Hackintosh (Chimera and Multibeast) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 with an Asus BW-12B1ST in FW v1.0 connected to a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H Rev 01 on FW vF9, Intel i7-4770k CPU. The optical drive is connect to the motherboard via SATA3 on #5 port which is controlled by the on-board Intel Z87x Northbridge. My boot drives are a RAID1 of two Samsung 840 256GB on a Dell PERC H700i hardware RAID controller FW 12.10.6 in the PCIe16x slot.

Just relaying what worked for me in detail since most forum-ilk tend to say to 'try this' or 'do that' without an explanation as to why. Don't relive me? Try searching for anything you don't know how to do and solve it with forum threads. Which tell you to TFFT or ' just Google it,' or 'that's all I know, try looking at another thread.' Read the threads around Ubuntu for more examples.

Should my method not work for you, then keep searching for a solution, obviously. (see, I can do it too.)
