Please Help... DVD unreadable after decrypting.

Post by gamekommander »

No problems decrypting the DVD but now when I try and play it in Windows Movie Player it gives me a "format is not supported in this region" error. It seems to work fine in VLC, but I'm now worried about running any more of my DVDs through this program and causing irreversible damage. Has this happened to anyone else? Please help. I had no idea the program was so destructive to the DVD itself.

Unless you've installed a third-party CODEC pack to support MKV files, the Windows Movie Player won't work with MKV files.

But this is just an issue in Windows Media Player? It didn't "break"/alter my DVD in any way? Should also note that im not trying to play the MKV files in the Media player, trying to just play the original DVD.

MakeMKV has no provisions for writing anything to the DVD. And, if the disk isn't a DVD-R or DVD-RW, even the drive could not alter the disk itself.

Media Player should still be able to play the disk directly, but it won't play the MKV file without help. VLC should be able to play both.

It wasn't. It was just a regular DVD. Before it would open in Windows Media but after running it through MakeMKV I get the Format not supported in this region error. Hence my concern.

Did this happen to be a disk for a different region? MakeMKV will brute-force the region encoding if the drive doesn't match the disk's region code, but Media Player won't. Have you played any out-of-region disks on the drive recently, which might have prompted you to change the region code?

(my drives do not have a region code set - I never play DVDs or BDs directly)

This was not a disc from a different region nor have I played any different region discs on my DVD drive nor have I changed any sort of region code associated with the drive.

Not really, at this point. Commercial DVDs can't be changed by consumer DVD/BD writers, so the disk itself should not have been altered.

If you have access to another drive, preferably on another machine, you can check the disk by playing it there. Why Media Player would stop recognizing it is a mystery.

The fact that VLC can play it says the disk is OK, but VLC also has region code bypass capabilities, so it's not a good test of whether it's an issue with the drive itself.

It is rather strange because it seems to work fine when I run it in my Xbox. It just gives me pause because I don't know why it now does that when it was running fine through Windows media before.
