The Mummy and TextST subtitles

Post by matt198t »

So using 1.9.1 I now have an mkv with TextST subs. I take it these are the forced subs?

Is their a player out there that will read them?

Vlc is a no, as is Kodi :/

TextST subtitles are an issue that is being looked at. See:

I wanted to post the solution I found for the forced subtitles on the 1999 version of The Mummy as there aren't many useful hits via Google, so this might help others.

On the UK blu-ray, the forced subtitles are in track 64 which is a textST stream. Makemkv can import it but Kodi won't play it (at least Krypton doesn't, I'm not on Leia yet). After some digging, I found this thread (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146501&page=4) via which I downloaded a textST.exe utility (you need the version that comes with calclib.dll). I reimported the disc as a back-up so that I had access to the source m2ts files, and it turns out that the forced subs are in the 0032.m2ts file. I dropped this in to textST.exe and it created a .srt file. I like to have everything contained in a single mkv so I remuxed the srt into the mkv rip of the film using MKVToolNix with the default flag set for the sub stream, and voila, I have The Mummy with the forced subs. Thank goodness this is the only title I have ever found where the forced subs are this much a of pain to manage. I tried some builds of ffmpeg to see if I could do this directly but they all failed.
