Errors with Captain America - The First Avenger

#1 Post by SoCalChip » Tue Dec 09, 2014 5:16 pm

Hello,

I am trying to create an MKV file of Captain Americe - The First Avenger on my Windows 7 PC. I am using MakeMKV v 1.8.9 win x64. I keep running into errors with this disk. I have tried cleaning the disc, first with eyeglass cleaner and a lens cloth then with pledge polish. I still run into errors. Below is a copy of the log of my last attempt. I do not think it is the drive or my PC because I ripped multiple blu-rays before and after this attempt.

I changed my preferences and increased the Read retry count to 11. I notice when the rip is about halfway done my drive starts to make noise like it is skipping over a track. There are a couple of small visible scratches on the disk.

I saw another post that commented that there is different sofware that may be better at ripping a scratched disk than MakeMKV. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I quickly scanned the movie on a blue-ray player (watching 3 seconds of a chapter then skipping) and it seemed to work. I will next watch a few chapters in their entirety to make sure the disc plays OK.

Thanks!

Scratches can be a big problem, especially with BDs. With a DVD, you lose less data to the same size scratch, and SOMETIMES, switching to a DVD drive with its different-wavelength laser can see through well enough to do the rip.

If you don't have access to someone with an actually disk refinishing system, the next step beyond what you've done is the "toothpaste treatment". You want a medium-abrasion paste, a clean finger and some water. With a wet finger with some toothpaste on it, gently work in a circular around the scratches.

Do NOT go overboard with this; proper resurfacing should be done with proper equipment, and this isn't it!

Rinse thoroughly, and wax the disk again.

If it still gives errors, check with DVD rental places (assuming they haven't all gone away in your area) about paying them to polish the disk.
