H_264

Post by fpefpe »

Hello -- I ripped a DVD and they tried to play it via my ROKU. The Roku Media Player (channel) notes that it
supports the MKV filetype but it needed a "codex" to play the mkv file generated by makemkv -- it did note that it
supported a H_264 encoding

Can did be done with makemkv?

MakeMKV does not do video CODEC conversions... it simply copies the video to the MKV file. And h.264 is a pretty popular standard right now - Just how old is your Roku? h.264 should be part of its firmware.

Most tools out there convert TO h.264, because it is a more efficient compression scheme than MPEG2, used in DVDs.

Apparently Roku won't touch MPEG2 and will only pass through DTS to a capable receiver. It's probably not the best player for DVD rips. If you must use a Roku, you'll need to convert the files using Handbrake or similar.

Hello -- That is exactly what I did -- converted the mkv to m4v with handbrake and roku plays the m4v fine -- thanks
