What are you trying to say?

Forced Subtitles are a secondary track split off from the previous subtitle track that holds any entries that are flagged as "forced", since Matroska can't hold forced and non-forced subtitles in the same track like BDs can. Or am I missing something?

Forced (or 'forced-only') subtitles are captions displayed by set-top players if no subtitles are selected by user.

Set-top players choose 'forced-only' subtitles of same selected audio language. Since Matroska doesn't tag 'forced', rippers should burn 'forced-only' subtitles like a player does (if only one audio language is selected).

MakeMKV doesn't mark 'impaired-hearing' (yet), while it seems it is capable of marking 'visually-impaired' audio, see 'For visually impaired',0, in en_utf16.cpp, line #455 for 1.8.14 oss.

Because it doesn't mark 'impaired-hearing' we have to guess 'Director's comments' or 'Impaired-hearing' from non forced-only subtitles.

I reported that for GI Joe Retaliation 3D, MakeMKV marks subtitles #30 as 'forced-only' which, when playing the rip Matroska file, subtitles #30 appears to be for 'impaired-hearing'.

I don't understand why this subtitles track mark is not correct, while usually it is.

This report is for Mike to help improve the program ; and for me i'ts annoying because I don't add forced subtitles in my 'Director's comments' or 'Impaired-hearing' guessing.

Track 30 is the companion to track 29, much like track 28 is the companion to track 27, it holds all the forced subtitles that are found in it's parent. Track 1 is the companion of track 0, it holds the 3d component of the video.

What makes you think it's actually SDH? Are you playing the file before or after you rip it to find that out? How many subtitle tracks are left in the output file? If MakeMKV parses the title in full and finds that there were no forced elements in the parent subtitle track it will remove the Forced Only subtitle track from the MKV.

My mistake!

Stream IDs in makemkvcon 'copy' is IDs expected in final MKV, so different as makemkvcon 'scan' for titles with MVC-3D (because one of the video stream #0 or #1 is not gona be in final MKV and every aud/sub ID is minus one).

So for my GI Joe, skipping #29 in 'copy' means skipping #30 in 'scan' ; forced is skipped so hearing-impaired stays, as expected:

As far as I'm aware AC3 is the only codec that has the ability to mark a track as 'For visually impaired', which I believe is what the code you referenced is about. Unfortunately, of all the discs I've ripped, only once have I ever found one that uses the 'bsmod' field and that was flagged as 'commentary'. I've ripped hundreds of discs with AC3 commentaries, and quite a few that could be assigned other bsmod settings and still I've only ever encountered that one solitary disc, which is probably the same disc that caused Mike to add those settings in MakeMKV in the first place. Filling in the 'bsmod' is not a requirement of the BD specs, a Blu Ray player doesn't use it and nothing else is supposed to play the track so there's no real reason for an author to use it (although it's really, really cool when they do). As far as I'm aware there is nothing in any specifications anywhere that allows authors to flag subtitles as 'impaired-hearing' [SDH], generally you either choose that in the BD menu or find it using the subtitles button, therefore MakeMKV will never be able to mark a subtitle as 'impaired-hearing'.

If anyone would like to correct me on that I'd be ecstatic to hear it.

-Edit- Nope, MakeMKV didn't recognise the track as anything when I tried to rip it again, maybe it's a HD-DVD thing. So what the hell does +sel:special do then?
