Correct title missing in makemkv

Post by LGTrader »

Hi,
I'm looking at a DVD on my Gentoo Linux system. The DVD plays fine in VLC. It appears to play title 49. When I scan the DVD in makemkv-1.8.13 (1.8.14 is not yet available on Gentoo) makemkv shows title 48 but then doesn't provide as an option in the choices window. I.e. - in the list below there are a number of lines like

Title #48 was added (16 cell(s), 1:49:46)

but then 48 isn't one I can choose in the GUI. In this case the GUI had about 10 choices but had 39, 69 & 72 as the last three.

How do I get makemkv to choose title 48 in this case?

Thanks

I noticed the log isn't showing what happened to Title 1, which is what you want. MakeMKV skipped 6 titles in favour of it, one of them would be Title 48 (I'm guessing the others would be Titles 39, 42, 57, 63 and 66), but since you say Title 39 is still there, there's definitely something amiss. If Title 1 is actually there try ripping that, otherwise Title 39 SHOULD be what you're looking for.

Yeah, I'm pretty confused here. I ran the disc (Draft Day) in VLC again. This time the DVD menu played Title 66 so maybe I was incorrect before about Title 39. Anyway, 66 is in the list as a possibility (makemkv didn't say much other than it needed to use CellTrim, but 66 didn't end up in the menu of titles I can choose. (screenshot attached as to what I see)

Reading between the lines, I think you're telling me that if the title doesn't show up in the GUI there's no way to rip it? man makemkv and makemkv --help don't provide any info other than pointing me to online help and online help doesn't say much, basically point & shoot. I believe Handbrake has a way to choose the title. I'll try that next.

You are right - Title 1 wasn't there, but neither was 6,7,18,23,25,26,33,51,54 & 60 so there's a lot missing.

Thanks!

MakeMKV removes titles that it sees as duplicates of other titles (which are on the DVD because of different default track selections, which MakeMKV ignores, or simply identical titles that are accessed through different menu options), which is why a lot of the titles seem to be 'missing'. Judging from the Title Durations, Title 39 should be exactly the same movie as Titles 48 and 66 as far as ripping with MakeMKV is concerned. There would be no benefit in finding a way to rip Titles 48 or 66 as long as Title 39 is listed.

OK, after a bunch of messing around and nothing working it dawned on me that possibly some library has changed since I last built makemkv and maybe Gentoo portage didn't catch that correctly. I rebuilt makemkv from scratch and now it works fine. Title 39 seems correct. The movie looks to be in order and the right length.

Sorry for the noise.

Cheers!

Here's what I've discovered: yes, MakeMKV removes duplicates in the log, but if you match the time in MakeMKV to another title and play that matching time in VLC player, VLC will bounce the title back to the original number.

For example: MakeMKV shows in the log

title 59: 1:36:37
title 61: 1:50:47
title 65: 1:38:20
title 70: 1:36:37

And VLC automatically plays Title 70, but it's not showing in MakeMKV's selection, but Title 59, 61 and 65 are shown.

Just go back to VLC player and change the playback title to 59. If it bounces back to 70, then you know 59 and 70 are the same. If it doesn't bounce back, then it's not the same.
