Howto distinguish episodes?

Hi,

i've ripped 2 Friends DVDs (.iso) of Season 2 to mkv files with makemkvcon and this resulted in the following files (see below).

As you can see i now have 56 .mkv files, however Friends Season 2 exists only of 24 episodes. So, what is the most efficient way to find out what files i need to keep - the 24 episodes? Can this be automated somehow?

Most likely, the extras are the same titles, with differences in the credits. Sometimes, the DVD packaging itself will contain information on "extras", such as actor/director commentaries, which are contained in separate audio tracks, turned on or off via a DVD menu selection.

90% of the time everything will be in the same order as the are listed in the disk labeling. Usually I play the start of the first few videos until I find what I am certain is episode 1. Then I will name the files sequentially from there using standard naming convention such as:

Friends/Season 02/Friends - S02E01.mkv
Friends/Season 02/Friends - S02E02.mkv
...

If there are two many, I also verify the remaining ones are extra features or such by playing them.

Once all the files are named a program like TVRename can add all the episode titles.

Occasionally, you'll find the episodes are out of sequence. So usually once I'm done with the renames I play enough of each episode to determine if it has the correct title. That is much easier to do if you have seen the episodes before on TV or such. Sometimes I find episode guides will list the length of each episode. That can be useful for finding misnamed episodes, when the sequence isn't right.

As for bonus features, unless you are lucky they display a title, it is usually just your best guess. I recently found I had the Doctor Who musical specials mislabelled, only by comparing with what was posted on youtube. There are actually several Doctor Who specials labelled "Doctor Who at the Proms", the only way to determine which year is which is to watch. They actually reference music and monsters from the corresponding year, so once you start watching them it becomes obvious, if and only if you know which Doctor Who season corresponds to which year.

One thing to be very careful of is thetvdb.com lists episodes in AIRED order by default. There is a checkbox in TVRename to tell it to use DVD order. In most cases the two orderings are the same, but in the cases where it isn't such as Firefly, you'll save yourself a lot of trouble by selecting DVD order.

okay thanks all for the tips, just wanted to make sure there isn't an easy "automatic" method before i start manually doing this

Nothiing automatic I know of, but often times file size alone is a big clue. It is unusual for extra features to be the around the same file sizes as the episodes.
