Trouble with Cars 2 & Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger T

Post by sminar » Mon Sep 08, 2014 10:38 pm

Hi,
I've been converting my physical DVD and Blu-Ray library to digital. Very successful so far, with two challenges.

I can't rip either of:
  • Cars 2
Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
The behavior is similar. I can load them into the Blu-Ray drive. MakeMKV sees them after the load. When I ask MakeMKV to scan the DVD for titles, it makes some initial progress then gives me an error dialog with the text: Fatal error occurred, program will now exit.

In the logs (can't attach the log file for some reason):
Debug log started at Mon Sep 8 22:10:35 2014 , written by MakeMKV v1.8.13 darwin(x86-release)
Using 524544KB for read cache.
001005:0000 MakeMKV v1.8.13 darwin(x86-release) started

I have attempted using 1.8.11 and 1.8.13 with no obvious difference.
I have examined the discs visually (seem fine) and played them from this optical drive successfully.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that they are both Disney DVDs, but I'm just guessing.

I'm ripping on a Mac (OS X 10.9 Mavericks) using an LG Blu-Ray model WH12LS39 firmware 1.03d

Any ideas how to get around this?

Thanks,

Steve

I've ripped a version of both of these DVD titles, so they should be readable. It doesn't mean that Disney didn't change things, but... that doesn't seem to happen as often on DVD as it does on BD.

Since this is happening in the scan phase, you may be able to localize the problem by seeing if the IFO files can be read. Follow the instructions in the FAQ linked in my signature to see if they can all be copied... if any of them fail as unreadable, that would put the problem on the disk itself.

Mike will have to decode what the debug codes mean, but they're usually MakeMKV trying to work around various error conditions.

Thanks for the quick response!

I've bumped into discs in the past that would play in various players but couldn't be read. I'm sure I'm not alone.
I tried opening the Pirates disc with finder and it just thrashed about, never showing me the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder.
I was able to open the Cars 2 disc and copy the IFO files, but I still can't get past the same error condition.

I'll send them on to support@makemkv.com if you want to take a look.

Best,
Steve
