What File Format does MakeMKV prefer/use for subtitles?

Post by Farenday »

Hi.

I have a MKV file, which doesn't have subtitles.

I added a subtitle (SRT format) using MKVMerge.

When I open the MKV file with MakeMKV, "I get this message Track #3 of type S_TEXT/UTF8 in MKV file is not recognized and was skipped."

This is, despite this error and also not showing the subtitle in MakeMKV, the file plays fine in XBMC with subtitles showing correctly.

But what file format does MakeMKV prefer/use for subtitles so I can ensure that all video files are error free in relation to subtitles?

Many thanks

MakeMKV is mostly a DVD/Blu Ray Ripper rather than an all purpose MKV muxer, so it recognises VOBSUB and PGS subtitles (and possibly other optical disc subtitle standards too).

If you are not ripping from DVD or BD, there are other tools that will let you manipulate MKV files. Search for "mkvtoolnix", although there are others.
