Bluray rip fails halfway through on almost all discs

Post by Tiedemate » Tue Aug 19, 2014 7:21 pm

Hi,

I have a hard time ripping BluRays. I have an Amazon Lovefilm account and receive two discs a month, which I rip to my USB-Stick to watch since I don't have a Hardware BluRay-Player. DVDs work ok, but BluRays fail almost all the time after having ripped a couple of GB...

I can however successfully copy the entire encrypted disc to my USB-Stick using a file manager. The transfer rate will drop sometimes to extremely low levels, so the drives do have issues reading the discs, but finally the copy will succeed. If I know try to open the copied files, I get:

Code: Select all

Opening files on harddrive at /media/tiedemate/Stickos
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc
I have tested with two different drives on multiple discs, which only have very minor scratches.
What can I do?

Is this a bus-powered USB drive?

The error messages are very similar to those given by OS/X and Windows when MakeMKV starts spinning the disk fast enough that the power from the USB port cannot keep up with the drive's demands. The voltage drops, the drive goes off-line, and nasty messages appear in logs. Then the drive is back... because the power draw dropped back to what the port could supply.

Fixes include making sure that the drive is plugged into a POWERED hub, and, if the drive has a "two-head" cable, making sure both USB plugs are plugged in. Some times using a USB 3 port, with its higher current limit, works, so long there is nothing else on the USB bus.

Most programs are not capable of pulling video off a BD as fast as MakeMKV can. Bus-powered USB drives sometimes come with a power supply for use when the USB ports cannot supply enough power.

I have taken the drive out of the external case and mounted it into a laptop, same result :(

Is it possible that the firmware of the BluRay player needs to be updated?

If have searched for new firmware for both my drives, to no avail. However I have once again complained about the discs at Amazon and got replacements, and those I could rip successfully. Looks like all of the discs were defective, but I am a bit puzzled because no severe scratches were visible. Fingers crossed for the next ones...
