Scsi Error - Need Help Understanding these failures

Post by titelies » Tue Aug 19, 2014 11:14 pm

Since about June I have been a really difficult time using MakeMKV. I'm not sure if it's hardware or software related. I have been experiencing issues with Blu-rays however intermittently cause some discs may fail and then others won't. Or discs that have failed one day then worked another. I'm using a Mac Mini with 4GB memory with no other programs open other than MakeMKV. Please help, I have been a paid user of MakeMKV for many years and this is the 1st time time I'm having this many problems consistently. I use an external OWC Mercury Pro
16X External Blu-ray Burner with a FW800 cable. Please let me know if you can transcribe any of this log info:

Searching for that error with Google reveals.... that other people have had that error pop up for a variety of reasons, from booting their computer in Ubuntu to ripping video with MakeMKV. What causes it can probably be found by reading more of the pages that came up, but I did not see a lot of reports on what it took to fix it. Some said, "reboot". Some said, "buy more hardware".

But it is definitely something the operating system is reporting to MakeMKV, so there isn't a lot MakeMKV can do about it.

Downgraded to version 1.8.11 and continue to get the error: 'Scsi error - STATUS_05' occurred while reading .....
This is the message I have been frequently experiencing. Any further assistance would be appreciated.

Most likely either A, the disc is scratched or B, your Blu-ray drive is going bad.

To be safe and to rule out the cable first, try using a USB cable and see if it makes any difference. If it does, then either you need to replace the cable, or it could be a port issue.

External optical drive must have been failing! Ordered a replacement and everything back to normal.

I have the same BluRay drive running on an iMac. Had LOTS of SCSI errors, which took me a while to figure out. Have you tried different FW800 cables? I had to go through 2 or 3 before I found one that worked constantly. They're NOT all the same.

Let me know how that works....

This may seem a bit far-fetched but I did track down a variety of SCSI errors
I was experiencing after ruling out a bad blu-ray disk.
Windows event log was showing controller error related to the BDROM drive
which indicated to me a hardware issue.
What I checked first:
*SATA cable to bdrom
*firmware update on bdrom
*switched bdrom sata port on mobo
*Yes, all of my mobo drivers were up to date

WAIT A MINUTE !!!
I had moved an external 4TB WD USB drive to internal SATA one week earlier.
Sure enough ... for some reason the bdrom did not like operating with
the WD Green hdd. It was just the combination of the WD Green and
my LG BDROM. Oddly enough the Green did not show any errors, neither
did my other two WD or Kingston hdds.
I moved the Green back to USB and the Blu-Ray ripping is humming along.

I figured this was worth posting because of the popularity of WD Green hdds.
I hope this helps someone.
