"This application version is too old."

I tried installing Makemkv 1.8.11 on my computer - windows 7 - and it installs. When I open it it gives me an error message that the application version is too old and that I need to download the latest version.

Why??

I had the same problem (on a Mac). The only solution I could find was to use the temporary key, posted at http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053

Mainly because the key that ships with v1.8.11 expired at the end of July. See:
