No subtitles in The LEGO Movie Blu-ray

#1 Post by HartleySan » Sun Aug 03, 2014 12:38 pm

I'm new to using MakeMKV, so I may be missing something, but I used MakeMKV the other day to create an MKV file of the main movie file on The LEGO Movie Blu-ray disc.
I selected all audio languages and subtitles, and in the resulting MKV file, all the audio languages worked fine, but none of the subtitles appeared, even though all of the subtitle options were selectable.

I tried displaying the subtitles in both Media Player Classic on my computer and from my Sony Blu-ray player on my TV, but no luck.
Also, no errors were reported during the conversion process, so I really don't know what's up.

Has anyone else encountered any similar issues, and do they have a solution?
Thank you.

The LEGO Movie is new and seems to have rather nice coy protection on it but...

Are you sure the subtitles are gone? How are you determining this? Does MediaInfo say they're not there? Did MakeMKV tell you it had removed the subtitles because they were empty?

It's possible the Subtitles aren't what you think they are, if they're English translation tracks you may have simply missed them while they were on display. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) DVDs in Australia have 'subtitles' but they consist of nothing but the title of the disc flashing on the screen for a few seconds in the beginning of the first episode and that's all. There are five episodes on the disc and the subtitles are present in all five episodes despite the last four episode mkv subtitles being completely empty. You should try viewing the file with MediaInfo first to see if there really are subtitles in the mkv, if there is then you could extract the subtitles using MKVMerge or EAC3To into a SUP file, from there you can open the sup file with DVDSubExtractor or other subtitle editing software to see exactly what's in it.

Or you could just wait for someone who's already ripped the disc and dealt with this.

Bluray uses a special subtitle format called PGS. Not all applications and hardware devices recognize them. And some that DO recognize PGS subtitles when reading them direct from the BD do not recognize them when they are in an MKV file, or if they aren't processed in a certain way (compressed with GZip, in the case of Western Digital media players).

My Uebo M400, for example, would show subtitles when playing an MT2S file, but not in MKVs, until I did a software update.... that took nearly a year to come out.

Which MPC? I just installed MPC-HC and played a Blu Ray MKV rip with it and the subtitles popped up as soon as I selected them using nothing but the internal filters at default settings.
