I have a Plextor PX-B310U that has never failed me. However, when I insert any of the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey Blu-ray discs, the discs are not recognized. All other Blu-rays that I've tried are seen just fine, and the Cosmos discs also work on my Samsung Blu-ray player. So there is something wrong with the combination of the Cosmos discs and my Plextor drive.
I know this isn't a MakeMKV problem per se, but I was wondering if anyone else is having problems reading or ripping these discs.

If the operating system does not indicate that a disk has been loaded, then MakeMKV won't be able to detect it, either.
If the disk is in the drive, its name should show up in Windows Explorer (or Mac Finder), whether or not MakeMKV is running.

Well, I figured that much. I was just wondering if there's some fancy new Blu-ray technology that would cause the disc to be unreadable on some Blu-ray drives. If so, then this would justify buying a new drive.

Cosmos uses dual layer disc. Have you tried any other Blu-ray that uses dual layer disc?

I don't know. Of the dozens of Blu-rays I've tried, Cosmos is the only one that doesn't work.
I think the PX-B310U supports dual-layer Blu-ray. The manual says:
For BDs, the PX-B310U and PX-B310SA:
• Reads BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, and BD-R DL media at up to 6X speed

Most Blu-ray 3D use dual layer disc. A lot of TV series Blu-ray also use them.
It is possible that your drive were faulty and couldn't read dual layer disc anymore. The only way to tell is to test it on another Blu-ray burner.

Well, I bought a new Blu-ray drive, and it can read the Cosmos discs, so I guess my trusty Plextor drive must move onto greener pastures.
