Subtitles

I can't make these work. On a standard DVD, subtitles show up fine. I can select or deselect any of the subtitle options. When I convert a blu-ray, the subtitle streams are there (identified in mediainfo and as options in any player) but if I select any of them, I get nothing. When I play the source blu-ray disk, I can select languages and closed caption. From the converted mkv... nothing. Am I missing a necessary codec or splitter or does the subtitle option in MakeMKV not work?
