Converting .dvdmedia to MKV with no loss in quality

Hey there -

Newbie here.

I am trying to convert all of my .dvdmedia ISO files to MKV. But I want to make sure there is absolutely no loss in the audio/video quality.

Does MakeMKV allow for this?

Also - when I rip a DVD to .dvdmedia the file output size is the same as the actual DVD movie. Does MakeMKV also output the same size file?

Anything else I should know considering I dont want to compromise the quality in any way?

That's pretty much the whole point of MakeMKV. It does a straight copy of the contents of a disc into MKV files. Unless you tell it to re-encode the audio into AAC or AC3 there's absolutely no chance of any loss of quality.

Is the output file the same exact size as the source?

The exact same size, except for different muxing overhead and no menus, there's also the matter of whatever tracks and titles you decide to discard. If your DVD recycles Title Sequences/End Credits, that might be an issue. But it's exactly the same core information with no alteration, put in a Matroska file.

So I just tried out MakeMKV...

The source file was 6.41GB and the output file was 6.2GB

Why is the file size smaller if there is no compression?

The source file did not include any DVD menus, etc. Just the movie.

Because as he wrote above there's less muxing overhead cause MKV is a more efficient container.

Which errors?

The log shows where MakeMKV corrected some problems with the synchronization between the audio and video tracks, but it doesn't list any errors.

You can turn off AV Sync issue warnings in your preferences, on the General tab.
