Hello,
Brand new forum member and MakeMKV newbie is hoping someone can help me with a technical glitch. I am using the following process to rip my favorite BluRays into MP4 files that I can watch on my PC.
Step 1: Create MKV using MakeMKV 1.8.9 (FYI I downloaded dtsdecoderdll.dll 1.1.0.1 into the MakeMKV folder)
Step 2: Use Handbrake 0.9.9.5530 to create a mp4 file
So far I have ripped the 6 BluRays from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Edition and the two Hobbit movies. My MP4 files are ending up between 3.5-5.0 GB and they look great. The problem is no matter what I do, The Avengers Blu Ray rips in 4:3 format and not 16:9.
I found the following post in the DVD section that describes a fix for Sleepy Hollow:
http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4514
I am assuming the problem is that my MPEG2 or MPEG4 file has an incorrect header. I downloaded MKVtoolnix as well as MKVExtractGUI-1.6.4.1. I cannot figure out how to extract the file and fix the header (assuming that is the problem). Can someone walk me through the proper steps (in as much detail as possible - I would appreciate screen shots) to fix this?
Thank you so much in advance!
Chip
The Avengers Not Coming Out Wide Screen
Re: The Avengers Not Coming Out Wide Screen
HD Blu Rays are encoded as 1920x1080 and should have a SAR of 1:1. Could you give us the MediaInfo output of the original MakeMKV Rip? Does the original play properly in VLC?
That's just odd.

Thank you for such a quick reply! I just installed MediaInfo. I hope the following answers your question:

Re: The Avengers Not Coming Out Wide Screen
OK, I have some more information. I am starting to wonder if The Avengers file is correct and the others have all been cropped. Here is why:
1) First, my computer display is set to 1920x1080. So doesn't that mean that a 1920x1080 HD video should perfectly fill the screen?
2) I looked at the mkv files for the LOTR and The Avengers. I did this looking at "Media Information" in VLC player. Both files show up as 1920x1080. When I play The Avengers.mkv on VLC set at full screen - there is no letterbox. When I play LOTR on VLC at full screen, there is letterbox.
3) When I look at the properties of the LOTR.mp4 videos in Windows Explorer, the resolutions vary. One of them is 1920x804 while another is 1920x798. They play with letterbox.
4) The Avengers.mp4 shows up as 1920x1080. It plays without a letterbox.
I am very much a newbie with these details, but could this have something to do with the Pixel Aspect Ratio? Is there a way to check the PAR on mkv files?
Or, are my LOTR videos actually just clipped on the top and bottom?

Lord of the Rings:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120737/tec ... tt_dt_spec
The Avengers:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848228/tec ... tt_dt_spec
As you can see, Lord of the Rings was shot with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, while the Avengers was shot with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Your monitor is presumably widescreen so has an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is much closer to The Avengers aspect ratio. The closest valid Blu Ray aspect ratio is also 16:9, so Lord of the Rings was encoded at 16:9 WITH BLACK BARS, which handbrake has removed, Handbrake is not limited to any particular set of resolutions or aspect ratios and the black bars would simply be a waste of bitrate if they were included.
The Avengers IS being played at 16:9, not 4:3. Everything is as it should be.

Thank you ndjamena! I guess I was so impressed with the LOTR that I assumed incorrectly that all BluRays would have the same format.ndjamena wrote:Lord of the Rings:
