AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
I have used MakeMKV to rip several Blu-ray disks in my collection and have never previously seen any error messages. However, repeated attempts earlier today to rip a Blu-ray of Rossini's opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia always produce the following error. I have tried both version 1.8.5 and 1.8.7 of MakeMKV. I also tried v1.8.9 but that started generating a huge number of debug messages half way through the rip, so I reverted to v1.8.7. I'm using 64-bit Windows 7.
AV synchronization issues were found in file xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
AV sync issue in stream 2 at 1:36:07.078 with duration of 117.333ms : 11 overlapping frame(s) dropped at segment boundary
My knowledge in this area is very limited. However, a quick playback of the MKV file around the 1:36:00 time code showed no obvious synchronisation issues. Can anyone please tell me if this problem is more significant than it appears and if there is any way to fix it.

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
MakeMKV has had the ability to fix audio/video sync errors for some time. For several versions, whether or not to TELL you it was fixing them was optional. Newer versions let you know it is happening without asking.

The message only tells me that MakeMKV found an AV sync problem. Are you saying that this message actually means that MakeMKV also fixed it?

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, the wording of the MakeMKV message is rather ambiguous.
I had simply assumed "11 overlapping frame(s) dropped at segment boundary" was a more detailed description of the synchronisation problem. It never occurred to me that it was actually the action taken by MakeMKV to fix the rip.

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
I thought this was the end of the matter but when checking out this new MKV file this morning I found that no subtitles appeared after about 1 hr 36 mins, the point where the AV sync error was corrected by MakeMKV.
The subtitles in question are actually VOB conversions of the original Blu-ray PGS subtitles (made using tsMuxeR and BDSup2Sub and inserted using MKVMerge), as my Oppo BDP-105 media player cannot display PGS subtitles contained in an MKV file.
More investigation is required...

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
It turns out that the SUP files extracted by tsMuxeR from the original Blu-ray disk (decoded using AnyDVD) go no further than about 1:35 from the start of this opera recording, i.e. up to the end of the first act. The original PGS subtitles are fine.
I'm guessing that the AV sync issues fixed by MakeMKV when creating my initial MKV file are giving tsMuxeR a problem it cannot handle. Unfortunately, tsMuxeR seems unable to read subtitle tracks from the MKV file, which is why I am using it with the original disk.
It's probably time for me to go looking for a forum dedicated to tsMuxeR...

EDIT on 2 March 2014: I subsequently found that tsMuxeR's apparent problem in reading the second act subtitles was because the second act was contained in another M2TS file!

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
Include the subtitles with MakeMKV and use mkvextract to extract them.
Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
I found that my copy of tsMuxeR was out of date so I'm currently re-running my subtitle extraction from the original disk using the latest version.
My workflow for ripping Blu-rays was established over 6 months ago and I can't remember if I tried using MKVExtract, though it seems like a logical approach, given that I already have the MKV file. There may be some reason why I chose to use tsMuxeR instead. When my current tsMuxeR process has finished I will check out MKVExtract.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
I've just remembered why I am using tsMuxeR. My first procedure for extracting the SUP files was indeed done using MKVExtract but the subsequent VOB conversions showed up in a blurred green format on my Oppo BDP-105. Using tsMuxeR instead of MKVExtract fixed that problem.
However, there is a possibility that recent firmware updates to the Oppo have resolved this issue, so it will certainly be worth my time to have another go at using MKVExtract.

Re: AV synchronization issues when ripping Blu-ray
The latest version of tsMuxeR also failed to cope with the AV sync issues on this problematic Blu-ray disk. Once again, there were no subtitles after the first act.
However, I am delighted to say that MKVExtract has no problem in extracting all the SUPs from the MKV rip. The recent firmware updates to the Oppo BDP-105 have also now enabled it to display the subsequent VOB conversions in a proper and legible manner. Obviously, this means that I will use MKVExtract from now on instead of tsMuxeR.

EDIT on 2 March 2014: I subsequently found that tsMuxeR's apparent problem in reading the second act subtitles was because the second act was contained in another M2TS file! I had not previously realised that the main feature on a Blu-ray could spread across multiple M2TS files and had always just opened the largest M2TS in tsMuxeR when extracting the SUP files.
