Subtitles Mispositioned

Post by gcoupe » Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:41 pm

I've started ripping my DVDs to MKV files. I've noticed that on at least two examples (and there may be more) subtitles seem to get mispositioned such that I can't read them.

What's more, the subtitles are in red, with white edges around the characters, and the characters appear to be larger than the native subtitles, and hence more blocky...

Here's an example http://1drv.ms/1c1oXPh

This is taken from an MKV rip of the DVD of Gormenghast. There are actually two lines of subtitles here, you can only see the top line.

I also see misplaced subtitles (also in red with white edges) on an MKV rip of Pan's Labyrinth.

An MKV rip of Rocky Horror Picture Show at least has the subtitles better positioned, but they are still oversized, and this time they are in purple text edged with green...

This is with MKVs made using MakeMKV version 1.8.8 64bits.

I should have added to my original post the fact that I was using Arcsoft's TotalMedia Theatre 6 (version 6.5.1.150) player to view the MKV files.

I have also reported this issue on the Arcsoft forum, and an Arcsoft representative replied saying:
I checked the sample MKV files created by the MKV group. Those work fine. External SRT subtitle files also work fine when paired with MKV.

However, if your MKV creation software just copies over VOBSUB subtitles from the DVD into the MKV container, then TMT doesn't currently supported extended subtitle functionality and you see the various issues you mention. Same is true of PGS subs from Blu, though the quality isn't as poor.
It looks as though the issue is with TMT6, although I note that he says that "sample MKV files created by the MKV group work fine". That would seem to imply that there is a way to package the subtitles into MKV such that they would work, and that MakeMKV currently does not do this.
