P90X3 - DVD # 2 does not want to be ripped - help

Post by Patius » Sun Feb 16, 2014 10:29 pm

Guys, i was initially trying to rip the DVDs using Handbrake, finally I found out P90X3 had done something to their DVDs and it was better to use MakeMKV - so I tried DVD#2 and nothing, the DVD got ejected after some scanning, tried the other DVDs and ripped all of them except this one.....the DVD is woking when I play it, but does not want to be ripped.... here is the codes I get when trying to rip it:

Using direct disc access mode
Title #1 was added (14 cell(s), 0:12:57)

These P90X disks are quite the problem - if you search here, you'll find several topics already out there on it, such as:

http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php ... hilit=p90x
http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php ... hilit=p90x
http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php ... hilit=p90x

The unfortunate thing is, I don't see any of them where the solution was found. The logs being posted say the disks have physical defects that cause the computer to give up, while a DVD player will skip over them. Yours is rather extreme in that the drive ejected the disk in mid-stream... Or, at least, that's what it reported to the operating system and MakeMKV

I've worked out what I think is a foolproof* way to rip these DVDs using MakeMKV and then turning them into mp4 using handbrake.

1. Run the DVD in VLC Media Player and make a note of the exact length of each one of the titles when I run them, e.g Eccentric Upper is 41:54 and Eccentric Lower is 40:15.

2. Open the disc in MakeMKV with the manual checkbox checked. It gives you a window with the list of titles and a text field below. We just need a list of the title numbers with those timestamps separated by a space. I created a regex expression that takes care of it for you: http://regexr.com/3amo9 Just replace the timestamps in the expression with your timestamps, making sure they are separated by a pipe (|), then paste the contents of the upper box into the regex editor. Finally, open the substitution window for your list of titles. Copy and paste them into the lower text field in MakeMKV.

3. MakeMKV will whittle your list down to a smaller number of titles, realizing most are fake. I unchecked the subtitle checkboxes in each title because I don’t want them. Press the MakeMKV button. The result should be exactly the same number of titles as your timestamps in the folder you designated.

4. Rename them and run them. Make a note the chapter where the commercials start. For instance, chapter 22.

5. Convert them to MP4 using Handbrake, but be sure to not include the commercials chapters. For instance if they start in chapter 22, only convert chapters 1-21. **

*Nothing is foolproof, as I’m sure will be proven :)
** I know MKV is better, however I wanted smaller compression and the ability to run without a codec. Also, removing the commercials was easier for me with Handbrake. If anyone has an easy way to do the same all in MakeMKV, lemme know.

You can specify desired chapters in manual DVD mode. So if you figured you need a title with number X and chapters 1-21 you can specify "X:1-21" instead of just "X" as manual title selection string.

I could not figure these 2 parts out. Also, I think some of this may have changed as Make MKV has been updated. The regex part really baffled me.

#2 - After checking "manual" mode and letting MakeMKV read the disc, it will pop up a dialog with a text box at the top. Copy the contents of the text box and paste it into the "Text" area of the RegExr page (from the provided link). The "Substitution" area will be the list of title numbers with a length matching the lengths you provided in the RegEx. Copy this list into the field at the bottom of the MakeMKV dialog.

The list of title numbers from the RegEx is longer than the actual title list because it includes duplicate (though fake) entries. You just have to try each one and all the fakes exhibit errors. Although, I found you can skip any that have the parenthesized segment-maps and they all appear in the first half of the list so starting from top is best. Also, once you have found the first real video, you can then skip any of the other titles which don't show the length of the second video; i.e., all the others with the same time as the first video are just fakes.

Since I did this already, here's my list using MakeMKV v1.97. Remember that the title numbers are zero-based:

I'm likely doing something wrong, but I tried using these strings in MKV 1.9.9 and its just saying "failed to open". Any help is appreciated.

I was able to do it a little easier but had to use your post as a guide. This successfully ripped every DVD on p90x3.
1) start in VLC and see/note what the workout length, title, and chapters are. You do this by right clicking. Side note, if you go back to menu and rerun the same workout the title number will probably be different. It seems that there are multiple *good* titles for each workout on the disk.
2) open in makeMKV with the manual checkbox checked. When prompted enter title and chapters you want in the text field. (I removed the ads at the end by using VLC to know where the workout stopped). An example would be 24:1-20 if I wanted to rip title 24 chapters 1-20.
3) rip with makeMKV, I removed subtitles.
4) Use handbrake to convert to MP4
5) downloaded into itunes as a home movie
6) downloaded onto my ipad that I can now take with me when I travel and do the workout in the hotel room.

It took me several hours figuring this out and I really appreciate davecarlisle's help in pointing me in the correct direction.

It took me several hours figuring this out and I really appreciate davecarlisle's help in pointing me in the correct direction.

waterwaterwater: I am having the same issue with the P90X3 discs. I was able to successfully convert all of Combat and TurboFire but the P90X3 discs are giving me the same error messages as mentioned above. I would like to use the method you describe but I am unsure how to go about "right clicking" on the title. When I play the dvd in VLC, there are no titles listed but only the name of the disc and when I right click on that it gives me none of the information I need. Where would I go or what should I be seeing in order to "right click" and find the correct information? Thank you. I figured it out! I finally found the information, just wanted to update this to reflect that. I found it by going to the top menu bar and clicking on "Playback" and then "title" or "chapter." BTW I am on a Mac and I don't know if the VLC app works differently but I was unable to get the correct information by right clicking. It would give me information that wasn't helpful.

I third this method, i will also post what chapter/titles i used ( removing the last few chapters removes annoying commercials ) \

What i did ( as suggested in this thread )
1. Open DvD in VLC
2. Open the workout i want and let it play ( this is important, pick the one you want and make sure its playing )
2.Click playback in top left
3.click Title and see which title is actually playing during the video i want ( it will have a bullet point next to it )
4. Write down which title is playing ( here you should check which chapters are the commercials if you want to remove them)

Close VLC

Go to make MKV

1.Open make mkv in expert mode so you have access to manually open dvd.
2.click open dvd manually button and open it.
3. A dialog box appears asking for what title and chapters you wan.
4. if you want for example title 22 chapters 1-20 in make mkv you type 22:1-22
If you want to do both workouts at the same time( rip 2 workouts simultaneously ) you do this
Example 22:1-22 33:1-19 ( separate them by 1 space )
After this just click make MKV and it should just work

Here are the titles and chapters i used. PLEASE NOTE YOURS MIGHT BE DIFFERENT THAN MINE. THERE ARE ALSO MULTIPLE "CORRECT" TITLES PER DVD. You really should do this manually. But in case you are lucky and my titles work here they are.

Accelerator- 3:1-22
Decelerator - 58:1-19
Eccentric upper - 33:1-23
Eccentric lower - 4:1-16
Cold start - 1:1-14 ( in cvx and total synergistic )
Total synergistic - 57:1-19
CVX - 4:1-25
Agility- 33:1-21
Trio metrics-4:1-18
Pilates X-4:1-21
yoga-17:1-11
The Challenge - 33:1-20
Incinerator - 4:1-22

I created an account just to thank you guys SO MUCH for this info. I've literally been working on this set for an entire day trying to figure it out. Thanks for the clarification, and thanks to ausername for being kind enough to include the title numbers and chapters that he used....You guys rock!
