Mono LPCM Timestamp Issues

#1 Post by Sarvajanik » Thu Dec 19, 2013 3:29 pm

This seems to be an issue that keep cropping up. My searches actually yielded complains about it from way back in 2011 (albeit on other forums - not here). But it looks like the root cause of this is something to do with the timestamp that MakeMKV puts on the audio when ripping Mono LPCM tracks from a source.

I've actually ripped my Criterion collection into MKVs. And as most Criterion films do, they're all Mono LPCM soundtracks. When playing back these files on XBMC there is a strange lagging issue that happens; which the devs have been kind enough to decipher (the logs) to discover a timestamp issue in the way the file was actually ripped.

To be precise... HERE is where the original discussion started. It was later moved to another thread HERE. The thread includes a YouTube video actually showing the issue. Similar issues have been reported HERE and HERE. And in almost every case... it has to do with ripping Mono LPCM soundtracks.

Hoping for some help/solution.

Please choose couple MKV files that clearly show the problem and do the following for each file:

Code: Select all

mkvinfo -C -x file.mkv > file.txt
(note the capital 'C' in switches). Then compress the text files and send them to support@makemkv.com . Use dropbox.com/mediafire.com/box.com if files are too big for email.

Thanks for replying Mike.

And apologies in advance. I'm not a very 'tech'y person, so please forgive my question. But can this command be run on a Mac? I usually perform my backups with MakeMKV on my Mac. And have boot camped into Windows only for playback (to get HD-Audio streaming in it's full glory.) - using XBMC.

If it involves installing a small tool in my Win7 partition and then running the command, I'm also up for that. Would be grateful if you could guide me a bit more though.

Installed Homebrew.
Ran 'brew install mkvtoolnix' in my Terminal window.
Seems to be hanging/getting stuck at:

Code: Select all

Last login: Mon Dec 23 23:53:38 on ttys000
SDs-MacBook-Pro:~ SD$ brew install mkvtoolnix
==> Installing dependencies for mkvtoolnix: boost, libogg, libvorbis, lib
==> Installing mkvtoolnix dependency: boost
==> Downloading http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/boost/boost/1.55.0/boos
Already downloaded: /Library/Caches/Homebrew/boost-1.55.0.tar.bz2
==> ./bootstrap.sh --prefix=/usr/local/Cellar/boost/1.55.0 --libdir=/usr/local/C
==> ./b2 --prefix=/usr/local/Cellar/boost/1.55.0 --libdir=/usr/local/Cellar/boos
Has been stuck at that for over an hour. Quit Terminal and tried it twice. Same.

Boost takes a while to build. Haven't timed it, but if your machine is slow-ish, it could take over an hour. If it's still stuck after 3 hours, then I'd say it's really stuck.

Done. Have emailed the .txt file to support@makemkv.com using WeTransfer.

If, for some reason it doesn't reach you, HERE's a link to the file directly. [http://we.tl/FONNvnxFgy]

Thanks once again. Looking forward to a solution.

Please try making the MKV file with 1.8.8 and see if it changes anything.

Bumping an old topic.

I have been making a mkv of Criterions. The sound is lpcm and when playing it on my mede8er it speeds up the sound and picture. Is there something I can do to fix it? Thank you.
