Getting Started

Post by WaWaZat »

Hey there! I could not find full instructs on how to use this software so I have some basic questions... if I missed the full manual somewhere, please point me to it!

On am on a Mac running Mavericks.

1. What is the proper procedure for making a copy of a standard copy protected DVD on to a DVD-R, in full resolution?

2. What are the Backup Disc and Save Selected Titles features for?

3, Can copies be made retaining all menu info and chapters?

4. What is advised for fitting content on DVDs containing more than 4.7GB of content on to a standard DVD-R with the best possible audio/video quality?

Thx!

1. Find a tool designed to accomplish that - MakeMKV is not the tool you want.

2. On Bluray only, you have the option of saving a disk as a copy of the original BD structure, optionally unencrypted, for software that can play such files. That's "Backup". Using the "open" feature (available for BD and DVD), you can select individual titles on the disk to be saved as MKV files.

3. That is the "backup" feature, but it is NOT something you can directly save to another optical disk, and a lot of software won't play it with menus.

4. Authoring new DVDs is outside the design scope of MakeMKV. You can use tools like Handbrake to compress the video, but the results are not guaranteed to play on a DVD player, since DVD players are not designed to read more modern CODECs.

So I've managed to make a .mkv file from an encrypted DVD. If I found a software that will convert this file to DVD format, could I make a disc that would play on any DVD player? If so, any recommendations on what to use? I found a recommendation on the MakeMKV site to use tsMuxeR for this but cannot find this tool on the site that it was linked to.

Or, can someone make a recommendation on what to use to unencrypted store bought DVDs in my own collection to make backup copies of? In my research in doing this, I found 2 articles suggesting MakeMKV for this.

What you're posting indicates you're really looking for a disk copy program. There are several out there that will create unencrypted ISO files that can be burned to a disk of at least the same size as the original, which means you'll need a dual-layer capable drive.

There are some DVD and BD authoring tools out there that will accept MKV files as tracks to burn. If you want to be able to play the results in a standard DVD player, then you won't be able to compress the video before doing so, which is why you need a dual-layer capable DVD burner, and DL disks.
