MakeMKV can't see my USB Blu-ray drive on OSX or Windows

Post by Tanhausergate »

Hello,

I'd be grateful for any help trying to sort out this problem.

I have a new USB connected Blu-Ray drive and am trying to use it with MakeMKV V1.8.5 on my Macbook (13 inch Early 2008, OSX 10.7.5), and also in Windows 7 on an HP laptop.

When I connect the drive to the Mac, I can see the drive and the inserted disk in the Disk Utility, but when I start MakeMKV, I can only see the internal DVD drive in the drop-down selection box.

When connected to the Windows machine, I can run CyberLink PowerDVD 13 and the Blu-Ray disk plays fine. MakeMKV just doesn't show the drive to be able to start a rip.

The drive is an "optiarc bd rom bc-5500a" in a USB caddy.

The log file on the Mac shows this:

Debug log started at Sat Nov 2 13:34:30 2013 , written by MakeMKV v1.8.5 darwin(x86-release)

Application exited at Sat Nov 2 13:34:50 2013

The log file on the HP Windows 7 machine shows this:

Debug log started at Sat Nov 02 13:36:48 2013 , written by MakeMKV v1.8.5 win(x64-release)
Using 524544KB for read cache.

Application exited at Sat Nov 02 13:36:57 2013

Both can rip DVDs from the internal drives.

Any help gratefully received.

From the log it looks like something is very wrong with this drive. Please do the following test - on your mac temporary disable DASPI ( "sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/daspi.kext" ) and then start MakeMKV - please post if it would work.

Mike,

Thanks for your response.

I've run the command to unload the kernel extension, but it has made no difference. The drive does not appear in the drop-down box.

Since my original question, I've been seeing what else I can do in the file menu, and find that if I go "File -> open" I can then browse to the BluRay disk, and manually select the "index.bdmv" file. However, when MakeMKV scans through the contents, if fails to decrypt the disk. This happens both with the kernel extension loaded and unloaded.

However ... if I use "Aurora Blu-ray Copy" to image the disk as an ISO, mount that ISO and then in MakeMKV "File -> Open" to browse to the index.bdmv file in the ISO, it opens and decrypts the disk-image without a problem. Its an extra step, adds a few hours to the rip process and chews up an additional 45GB of storage space with a Blu-Ray image, but it is a work around!

Is there any additional evidence I can generate for you?

Many thanks for your help looking at this problem.

Well, in short, your drive is incompatible with MakeMKV. In more details, from your logs, the drive fails the SCSI "INQUIRY" command. I'm truly puzzled why everything else works with your drive. Can you please provide the exact model of the drive, preferably with the link to product page?

Mike,

Thanks for your reply.

I bought the drive from an Amazon seller. The link to the drive is:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002 ... UTF8&psc=1

I had trouble with the first drive - the Blu-Ray laser was probably broken - and they sent and they replaced it with another one. This is the one we've been talking about.

The seller tells me that the drive is Sony manufactured. A search shows me that it is part of a line which has reached end-of-life at Sony.
http://www.sony-optiarc.us/endoflifepro ... 500as.html

On reflection I think the seller has purchased a batch of these drives and is putting them into P-ATA to USB enclosures and selling them on. Assuming the electronics in the enclosure operate correctly (big assumption, I know) this should be a pretty standard drive, and it looks like it was used for some time as an internal drive in the Viao line of laptops, as well as by other manufacturers.

I've tried flashing new firmware to the drive, but the Sony software to do this checks it is running on a Sony laptop before it starts fiddling with the drive, so it's stuck on its current release.

I have a work-around (using Aurora), so all is not lost. My problems are, no doubt, the result of using a cheap knock-off-end-of-life drive in a dodgy 3rd party enclosure. If it annoys me enough, I'll eventually upgrade to a decent drive.

Happy to do what I can in investigating further, but completely understand if you want to close this down and concentrate on more pressing things.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info. I would bet on USB enclosure being at fault. On the other hand there is no excuse for MakeMKV not to recognize the drive, when everything else works with it. Please see PM for additional details.

I have an external USB BD-ROM drive that is not being recognized by MakeMKV also. It mounts the disc in Finder but does not detect the drive when opening MakeMKV.

This is the drive that was purchased:
http://www.amazon.com/Blu-Ray-Player-Ex ... roduct_top

The internal drive is showing in System Profiler as:
BD ROM BC-5500A

Is this still an incompatibility issue or is it configuration related?

I have the exact same drive, and seeing the same issues. It only see's my ATAPI drive. in the source...

In Windows 7, MakeMKV can see the drive if I OPEN FILES and browse to F: (the External USB BD drive)

It tosses this thou....
------------
MakeMKV BETA popup

The folder "F:" appears to be a root folder on optical drive, however drive can't be accessed by the program, The operation will most likely fail.
------

Which it does.... This is "Startrek (2009)" in the drive

Opening files on harddrive at F:
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
DEBUG: Code 0 at <0zZ6?EKplbrxbvX:29395379
DEBUG: Code 0 at <0zZ6?EKplbrxbvX:29396943
Failed to open disc

I'm going to keep playing with it and see if I can figure a way to get Makemkv to see this drive... probably need some sort of atapi driver....

I've attached this same drive to my Windows 7 VM running AnyDVD and it was able to successfully decrypt and save the Bluray to the hard drive. Now at least I know the drive I have works properly. I would love to see support for this drive added to MakeMKV.

FYI - I'm on windows 7 not MAC - but this topic is in here ;)

Well Totalmedia see's and plays the BD just fine, I attached the drive to my Media Center PC and was able to watch the BD within Media center just fine using Totalmedia. I installed a fresh copy of MKV on the machine and it only see's my DVD drive.

Anydvd see's it fine and rips dvd's from it correctly (I don't have the HD licence with anydvd)....
----
Summary for drive F: (AnyDVD 7.1.5.2, BDPHash.bin 13-02-18)
OPTIARC BD ROM BC-5500A 1.86 SEP14,2007
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

Current profile: BD-ROM
Media is a Blu-ray disc.

Total size: 20964800 sectors (40946 MBytes)
Video Blu-ray label: STARTREK11D1AC

This version of AnyDVD does not work with Blu-ray discs!
Please upgrade your keycode to AnyDVD HD!
----
The computer see's it correctly.
-
Device function summery

Manufacturer - (Standard CD-ROM Drive)
Location - on USB Mass Storage device
Device Status- This device is working correctly
-

I've tried a few different drivers to no avail, I've looked into the bios and made sure the device is being read correctly as an optical drive (I could boot from it also)....I've yet to take the case apart and see if I can connect it directly ;) thinking about it thou... but since I just got it 2 days ago........ lol

If I was to make a bet, I'd say the way Makemkv is looking for drives, does not account for the USB drives correctly, unless the drive has a scsi or atapi implemented driver.

I have a old XP and VISTA machine that may load the driver different I'll test those in a bit.

I'll keep trying ;)

I should have mentioned that I did try MakeMKV in Windows 7 as well with this drive and got the same errors as you. That's what lead me to test the drive with a different application. The drive installed immediately in Win7 and showed in explorer like it should. BluRay discs would mount properly, but when I opened MakeMKV, it was the like the drive was not connected to the computer whatsoever. I couldn't get MakeMKV to recognize my external drive and I got the same errors as you when I tried to open the folders on the drive manually.

Pulled drive apart :)

It's a HP drive

BD-ROM/Dvd/cd
Re-writable Drive
459174-4C0
BC-5500A-H1

Model No BC-5500A
Power Supply 5v / 2a

Uses the Standard optical drive hookup for a laptop - Will need to buy an adapter to test it outside of the USB system that it's currently connected too.

I think I found the adapter
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024CV3VW/ref ... YO8NNRCYW2

need to order it to test.

I look forward to hearing any updates. I also have this drive, and while it works perfectly with every other app I've tried, for some reason MakeMKV just refusing to recognize it. If the problem is enclosure based, that would be a fairly simple adjustment to make. Very annoying, but simple. Thanks for experimenting.

I had a similar problem on my older MacBook Pro with a similar looking USB Blu-Ray player. Mine came with a power connector that attached to the USB port on my pc and it worked perfect. Attaching it to my Mac I had to use the power connector on one USB port and there was a 2nd usb to usb cable for the data on the other USB port. Without both cables it didn't work at all.
