subtitles FAIL on "Les Cent et une Nuits" aka "101 Nights"

#1 Post by captain » Wed May 01, 2013 1:22 am

I ripped the DVD all possible ways, even manually named the English subtitle track. MakeMKV just absolutely refused to put the subtitle track in the resultant .mkv file. Thank God MacTheRipper did the job. [strike]I suppose that maybe MakeMKV would have done an acceptable[/strike] full-disk Backup wouldn't even enable, but I wanted a simple .mkv file. Something just ain't right here. Could it be I'm just too stupid to figure out the right buttons to push, or is this a bug?

Not sure what good it'll do, but here's the log file, below. I think the subtitle track must be some weird non-standard format. Even the full DVD rip will only display the subtitles in VLC. Boxee sees a track, but then nothing displays when that "subtitle English" track is selected. Very strange--and annoying. :-P

I had an idea to transcode the full-disk rip done with MacTheRipper, using VLC, but all I got was two hours of Title Screen! :-P I'm at a total loss now. :-(

- use re-author mode in DVD Shrink to select the main movie (including all subs)
- right-click on the title and select start/end times
- choose a scene of ~3 mins that has subs and output the clip
- verfiy the clip has subs with any software player
- if it has, zip it up
- upload this clip to sendspace.com so people can take a look

Thanks for the suggestions Chetwood, but you seem to have missed the part about this happening on OSX Mountain Lion--or I missed the part about DVD Shrink being available for anything other than Windoze. Please let me know if you have a solution that might work on OSX.

Ideally, Mike will be able to figure this out and get MakeMKV to just do its job on this weird French DVD, and rip the subtitles too.

Oh, Hell's Bells! I'm an idiot for not thinking of Handbrake. It's FRENCH too after all. I bet it'll do the job just fine. :-)

Still, Mike, please let me know if you need any other info to help you get MakeMKV able to handle this. Cheers!

WINE runs on OSX, right? And how do you expect Mike to fix this if he hasn't access to the disc which - given the fact that pretty much all other DVDs work just fine - is strangely authored?

Please extract the subtitle track from produced MKV file using mkvextract and send me the file.

I may not be fully comprehending what you want me to do, but I find no subtitle track in the resulting MKV file (despite having selected it for the rip using MakeMKV) using MKVtoolnix. See attached screenshots.

PS: if this is just to help me, don't worry about it. I can watch the DVD rip in VLC. It just isn't as nice as watching a proper mkv rip on the big screen. If this can help you figure out how to make MakeMKV better, then I'll continue thrashing with it per your instructions.

I suggested DVD Shrink to make a small clip cause the whole DVD should be too much to upload. Having an ISO with all streams, Mike could verify if it's a problem of MakeMKV.

Yes, please do. Please make a test dump of this title per instructions at /onlinehelp/testdump.html (be sure to select subtitles). Thanks!

Oh! That's a very nifty feature. :-)

Ok, I have done a *TESTDUMP* from the MacTheRipper disc image (which does play fine in VLC, audio, subtitles, and all). I don't know what I'm gonna do in the future, if MakeMKV can't rip a disc, as MacTheRipper no longer runs on these newfangled OSXes. :-(

*TESTDUMP* file will be sent to support@makemkv.com
