Problems with DVD to MKV

#1 Post by EclecticeMusic » Mon Jan 18, 2010 2:50 am

I am new and scanned the forums quickly. I see queries about specific DVD rip issues . My issue is more general . Let me know how I should post for help.

I have attempted to convert around 100 DVD to MKV using MakeMKV. Around 50 work well . Chapters and selected audio streams are there in MKV. PERFECT.

Some 40% fail after MKV scans the disk. It fails to copy the selected titles. This is erratic behaviour. Sometimes it will copy 3 of 4 titles. sometimes none. I have switched to copying the DVD to a folder on my disk . I use ANYDVD and 1 Click DVD Copy. Then I run MakeMKV on this folder. Around 10% of the time if i rerun makeMKV on the same folder and deselect the titles already copied and only copy 1 title at a time it goes thru.

Around 10% of the time it skips meg audio streams . only video in selection

Around 5% it fails to open disc. Many debug messages.

My collection includes a number of musicals and a fair number of Bollywood Hindi movies. Though I do have occasional problems with English Movies and BBC Discs. The musicals and Hindi Movie have the most problem. The discs themselves are in good condition and play well in several DVD players and can be ripped using many tools like DVD Shrink etc.

I would be very keen to contribute to improve this product a sit is a no fuss tool ideal for consumers like me. Should I log each type of problem separately with the debug log? I wanted to check known issues where I can avoid flooding the forum.

Thanks

Hi!
Around 10% of the time it skips meg audio streams .
Actually, it will skip MPEG audio streams 100% of the time ;>}

Nestled in the thread about problem DVDs and BluRays is the following statement from "Mike Chen":
Re: List of DVD/BluRay that haven't worked
If this is an european DVD the track might be in MPEG audio format which is not supported by MakeMKV at the moment.by mike admin

Thanks. You are right about MPEG. Only few of my musical DVD were mpeg . Waiting to hear about other issues, Need to know if this is a known issue and will be corrected in future or I am doing something wrong.

In light of the oft' referred to poor physical quality of Bollywood DVDs, it's not surprising to hear of the inconsistent behavior you've experienced with such releases...

I get the general drift . Whenever the log shows debug line with funny characters the Software has issues with media stream continuity and a bad rip is suspected. Unfortunately this happens equally with BBC Musicals/ Shows like the RSPC Shakespeare collection or J Lo Concert and Bollywood. In future I will log specific DVD to illuminate this issue.

What is surprising that I do not detect any issues playing them or transcoding them to AVI using other tools like COWON JET AUDIO
