Variable Frame Rate Output?

Post by ndesant »

Hi. I registered only to ask for help with a strange issue. I have used AnyDVD to rip my copies of The Wire to ISO. I am now attempting to take these ISOs and make them into lossless mkv files. Everything during the process is fine and very quick. However when I check the output mkv with mediainfo it reports the frame rate as variable. Also, when I play the file in potplayer, Ctrl+J shows a frame repeat every 40 seconds which is unacceptable. Comparing to the original vobs, they have a constant frame rate of 29.97 and playback with no frame drops or frame repeats. Any ideas how to force MakeMKV to output the correct framerate? It does seem to recognize the frame rate correctly while working, but alas, the output mkv is always variable.

This sounds wrong. Please enable "log debug messages" and "show AV sync errors" in preferences, make sure you're using 1.8.0, and try making MKV again. Please post error log here.

Most likely MediaInfo's fault though. My CFR encodes are sometimes reported as CFR, sometimes variable, depending on how MediaInfo feels on that particular day…

Perhaps, but I doubt it since frame repeats are horrible in potplayer. This has also happened around 40 times, using the older and newest versions of the program.

edit**
However, when I switch to a refresh rate of 59.94 instead of 29.97 frame repeats are much decreased.
This step is unnecessary with the original DVD or the original VOB, as they both do not drop or repeat at the exact refresh rate as frame rate.

Thank you both for any help you can provide.
