MakeMKV won't even open the disc
I have used MakeMKV (linux) in the past with success. However I recently rebuilt my HTPC, installed makemkv 1.7.10, and can no longer access Blu-Rays I once did:
> makemkvcon info disc:9999
> cat MakeMKV_log.txt
Debug log started at Tue Jan 15 05:35:42 2013 , written by MakeMKV v1.7.10 linux(x64-release)
Using 524544KB for read cache.

001004:0000 Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /home/username/MakeMKV_log.txt
001003:0020 DEBUG: Code 1 at HzV2AK$u0Bv"(ANVUjLNs:121263728
005010:0000 Failed to open disc
Application exited at Tue Jan 15 05:35:43 2013
Running the MakeMKV GUI version shows "BD-ROM ATAPI iHES208 2 8L0C" in the source window, and results in "Disc Being Loaded" when I insert the disc, followed by (after ~45 odd seconds) "No disc inserted", and nothing shows in the log file.
Hardware is a LiteON iHES-208, kernel is 3.2.0-35-generic. The same hardware can read both audio and DVD discs fine.
I have tried two separate Blu-Rays to no avail...

MakeMKV can't see your drive. What is the output of ?
Code: Select all
cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

Re: MakeMKV won't even open the disc
Thought about that - which is why I tried to access audio CD's and DVD's on the drive to insure connectivity (success). Also, MakeMKV was successfully identifying the drive (see photo)
Code: Select all
CD-ROM information, Id: cdrom.c 3.20 2003/12/17
drive name: sr0
drive speed: 48
drive # of slots: 1
Can close tray: 1
Can open tray: 1
Can lock tray: 1
Can change speed: 1
Can select disk: 0
Can read multisession: 1
Can read MCN: 1
Reports media changed: 1
Can play audio: 1
Can write CD-R: 1
Can write CD-RW: 1
Can read DVD: 1
Can write DVD-R: 1
Can write DVD-RAM: 1
Can read MRW: 0
Can write MRW: 0
Can write RAM: 1

Was it something I said?

No, Mike just isn't here every day...

Tried again tonight - read a DVD absolutely fine. Followed up with the Blu-Ray of the same movie - still no joy.
I'm flummoxed.

I apologize for missing the replies.
Unfortunately I can't think of anything that can cause this. Can your drive read BD discs at all? Can you mount the disc and see the files?

Re: MakeMKV won't even open the disc
May be just a stupid idea:
But do as Mike said.
Put in the BD first, allow it to be mounted (or mount manually). Then try to access files on the BD (e.g. copy some smaller one to your HDD). Then launch MakeMKV and see what happens.

Re: MakeMKV won't even open the disc
Just to be clear - I don't have that many Blu-Rays, so it has been months since I've attempted to use the drive. The drive + MakeMKV did work back then, doesn't seem to now. There's been at least one point release of MakeMKV since then.
I have used MakeMKV in the last two days with a DVD, worked as expected. I have also read a music CD recently, so that functionality is still there.
But with Blu-Ray discs, it doesn't matter if I load the Blu-Ray and fire up MakeMKV, if I fire up the software then load the Blu-Ray, or 'eject -t /dev/dvd' after either operation, MakeMKV reports it is attempting to access the disc (for around 30 seconds), then gives up the ghost and says 'no disc'.
About the only thing left that I suspect is that maybe the Blu-Ray laser died. If that's the issue, the mechanics would still function, the CD laser and DVD laser would still work, and the SATA connections would still be good (which would explain why the software attempt to access the Blu-Ray) - all my symptoms. I did try to blow off any dust with some canned air, but that didn't help either
I've got a second optical bay available to me in my case. I'll probably try to buy a new Blu-Ray drive in a week or so and give that hypothesis a try. Recommendations for a cheap SATA Blu-Ray player?

Re: MakeMKV won't even open the disc
Oh, should have said, I did try a manual mount of the device very early in the troubleshooting phase (before I posted for help). Didn't work either. I didn't know if you could manually mount a Blu-Ray or not, so failure didn't set off the warning horns, but in retrospect it may strengthen the hypothesis the Blu-Ray laser is dead...
Re: MakeMKV won't even open the disc
Uhoh...this does not sound good.
Usually the BD drive should at least initialize the BD once inserted. Under Linux distributions Udev takes care of automounting. You can then access the file and copy them over as usual files on any media.
If mounting does not work this indicates hardware issues (either BD or drive).

Hi!
Hi!
That's the direction I'd be leaning in...About the only thing left that I suspect is that maybe the Blu-Ray laser died.

Glad to hear that your solution worked ;>}
