Read speed suddenly only 1x while ripping blue rays

Hi all,
I use makemkv under WIN XP since 8 month with the current release level and had all the time a read speed of around 2x during ripping blue ray?s.
This is not much and is caused by the riplock that's build in my LG BH10LS38 firmware.

But since end of November the read speed slows downs to around 0.9x although the configuration has not been changed.
I pached the firmware to remove the riplock without bigger change. Starting with 0x the rate speeds up to 2,6x but decrease to stable 1,2x after few seconds.
I have the same behavior with other blue ray?s and older mkv releases that worked with 2x before.

Any idea how to speed this up ?

It sounds more like the drive is dying than a configuration failure.
