Region errors opening DVDs

Post by adrock0211 » Sat Nov 24, 2012 9:40 pm

I have the following optical drive:

LITE-ON Black Internal 12X Blu-ray Combo SATA Model ihes112-04 - OEM

The odd thing is that every time I open up a DVD in MakeMKV I get the following error:

Drive BD-ROM ATAPI iHES112 3 ML02 has RPC protection that can not be bypassed. Change drive region or update drive firmware from http://tdb.rpc1.org. Errors likely to follow.

Now most of the time it rips the DVD just fine but I am just concerned that the few times it DOES have errors that this might have something to do with it. I am in the US and the majority of the DVD's I am ripping are US DVDs. I have checked the optical drive and confirmed that I am indeed running as region 1 which is the US region but for some reason I still get this error every time.

The only time recently I haven't gotten this error is when I was ripping Audition which is a Japanese movie which is odd because again, I have confirmed that my drive is on region 1 but all the US DVDs spit out this error.

Any advice?

This appears to be a new structure protection. The region1 DVD has a fake titleset that is encoded as region2 . Because titleset is fake, MakeMKV eventually skips it. Unfortunately it prints above-mentioned error during the scan.
