Editing DVD/BD Footage

Post by MikesMac »

I apologize if this topic has already been discussed in depth, but here is something I'm curious about: I need a program which will allow me to rip the video off of DVDs and BRDs for use in editing programs. Now, I know that Premiere (as an example) does not allow the importing of MKVs, but, if I remember correctly, Vegas does.

Have people on this forum had success in dropping DVD/BRD footage ripped with MakeMKV into an editing timeline? (Just looking for personal experiences with doing this)

Also... it's probably has already come up multiple times but... is it possible that MakeMKV will support and MP4 container, or will that still require re-encoding (such as with Handbrake)?

You don't need to transcode at all. Once you produce MKV file, you can extract all elementary streams with mkvextract (part of mkvtoolnix package) - that should take only few minutes. Produced elementary stream files. Virtually any editing program will import data from elementary stream files.
