Only utilizing 4/8 Cores with Retina MacBook Pro

Post by Claudio »

As the bars show in Activity Monitor under 10.8 using the new Retina MacBook Pro, only 4 of the 8 available hyper threaded cores are be utilized (running no other applications at the time). Will a future release utilize all 8 processors?

MakeMKV doesn't re-encode the video. With a setup like yours, the CPU is hardly a bottleneck.

I should of been more specific. This is when I'm using MakeMKV with a BDMV folder on my internal SSD, not from an external USB 2.0 Blu-Ray drive. The SSD has given speeds of 450MBps Read/400MBps Write, so couldn't the use of 8 cores be beneficial?

Depends. How quickly (or not) is it going (i.e. how long does it take to convert a BDMV to one or more MKVs)?

That kind of speed sounds perfectly normal for that kind of setup, IMO (i.e. not too slow or anything). It juts seems like the CPU is not a bottleneck, even with such a fast drive.
