Hardware, Disc, or Software issue

Post by ninster »

I am having an problem with the first disc of the Blu-Ray Alien Anthology set.

I was able to use MakeMKV once on it but the resulting video was very glitchy: macroblocks, frames skipping back and forth, distortion, etc. Audio seemed fine.

Since then I cannot get it to work again. I get the following errors:

I've run a disc cleaner through the drive and made sure the disc itself was clean. Disc plays fine in a hardware player (PS3) with no issues.

I also heard the optical drive making noises much like old floppy drives would make when software companies would use illegal sectors/damaged sectors to prevent copying (C64, I'm old). I've been able to work with one other Blu-Ray (Predator) just fine. VLC doesn't like the resulting mkv but that's not unusual.

To make sure that we are talking about the same version of Alien Anthology, my copy is the USA release, barcode label reads: Blu-ray Cat. #2270216 and the UPS barcode number is, 0 24543 70216 0 80.

My first disk had no problem reading at all, in fact, all four blu-ray movies read just fine. No macroblocks or frame skipping that I can see. As soon as I get it encoded, I'll let you know if I encounter any other problems.

I'm currently using Make MKV ver. 1.7.4. It's starting to look like you need to return the blu-ray set to were you purchased it and get a replacement. Sometimes blu-rays will read just fine in a set top blu-ray player, but not in a computer blu-ray drive, I've had a 4 or 5 blu-rays that did this very thing and had to get them replaced.

The only other thing it could be, is that your blu-ray drive for your computer is going bad possibly, but more likely, it's the disk.

Just finished watching the encoded disk 1 of Alien Anthology, (handbrake encoded) it was prefect, no flaws at all. It's looking like your problem is either a bad disk, or bad blu-ray drive!

Thanks for the replies. At least Amazon isn't hard to deal with.

It was interesting to discover this old thread, since I've had exactly the same problem with disc 1 from the Alien Anthology, despite discs 2-4 working fine. I got a replacement disc, but got exactly the same result. So does this mean there's something in particular about this disc that some drives just don't like? Or just that my drive is on the way out?

Possibly. If you follow the FAQ that Mike linked to above (also in my signature), more information would be available to say yes or no.
