Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated New Pioneer Flashing 2026
Currently looking for a pre flashed drive. I have received 3 fake BP50NB40s from different sellers on eBay. I’ve even tried 2 BU40N’s from Amazon however they came very used and not well taken care of. I’m honestly tired of the headache of trying to flash, or even if the drive is real. I’m new to 4k ripping and am eager to learn. If anyone sells pre flashed drives for a fair price please let me know! I’m also interested in switching gears from the external slim lines entirely and instead using a Pioneer WH16NS40.

Figured it out! My drive's default reading setting was Quiet Mode, so I changed it to enable High Speed reading, and it now reads UHD discs perfectly!

Two questions for flashing on Mac:
Drive information:
Model: Buffalo PUS6U3B (BU40N inside)
Revision: BN14
Drive Platform: MT1959
Questions:
Thank you!
Drive information:

Questions:
- Is HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin from the "all you need firmware pack" the correct firmware to flash?
- Is makemkv 1.17.7 still the recommended version for flashing? (I've been ripping on 2.0.0.)
Thank you!

Yes to the first question. You will need to use rawflash enc. As for the second question, using 1.17.6 and 1.17.7 for flashing/dumping is only recommended for Linux users (due to later Linux versions having a broken firmware tool). For Mac (and Windows) users, I personally recommend 1.18.4. While flashing should hopefully work fine with 2.0.0, version 2.0.0 is known to have bugs, and a bug occurring during the flashing process would be really bad. I wouldn't want to risk it with 2.0.0, so I would just use 1.18.4 on Mac, personally.

Alas, it worked only twice, and then it stopped reading UHD discs again, so I think the high speed setting was a red herring. I was making micro adjustments to the pot screw inside, it has helped speed up reading stand blu rays, but still no luck getting a UHD disc to read (i mustve just got lucky those two times). dang!Yethidran wrote: Thu Oct 15, 2026 2:02 am Interesting find, about the (Quiet Mode to High Speed Reading Thingy) i will also do that change for all my existing drives i have.

i have taken apart many of these drives to repair them
i feel like your asking ai or something to guide you through this and it knows nothing and you have no experience with these drives and dont understand how they work internally
and thats not to insult you but we cant have bad info like this posted here as it misleads others thinking they should start turning some screw in the drive to fix it... and this is not the first time i have seen this pop up

It is a thing. There are three height adjusting screws where the two rails are that the laser assembly glides along, adjusting them changes the distance of the laser to the disc's surface.
