Received my BDR-S08XLT and it's working great with my Benfei adapter. I've successfully ripped DVDs, BDs and 4k BDs with it. Really pleased with the drive and the service from the seller is excellent. I especially appreciated the use of a decent courier rather than just using the cheapest.

The entire purchase process was smooth and levtrocki was very quick to respond to messages and to ship it out. The drive worked flawlessly for all of the tests I threw at it today. Nothing but positives to say about the entire experience, would reccomend without question.
fatal stance wrote: Fri Aug 07, 2026 5:44 pm Received my Pioneer BDR-S09XLT in pristine condition. It shipped and arrived really fast from Turkey to East Coast US in just 3 days. The drive worked perfectly straight out of the box with zero issues, instantly reading and ripping my 4K UHD Blu-rays like Akira and Madoka Magica collection with many more to come. Fantastic communication from levtrocki throughout the entire process. Do not hesitate to buy, otherwise, you'll be sorry you missed out once the stock dries up.

Received payment request 29Jul2026 when inventory arrived (inventory was out when i made the request). Received the item 03Aug2026. Everything is as advertised. Came in original box, packaged well. Already flashed and ready to go. Ripped around 3TB worth of 4Ks so far. No issues. Reminder that you will need to buy your own enclosure. This will not fit in the 5.25 OWC enclosure often recommended here without modification due to how the PCB sits in that enclosure. I mounted it in a vantec 5.25 enclosure instead. Seller is pretty responsive, and I don't think you'll experience any issues. I did not pay any customs on my end, but YMMV.

I received my Pioneer BDR-S09XLT drive yesterday. It took 5 days to reach its destination (EU).

After some testing, I can confirm that it is working flawlessly. Thank you so much, @levtrocki!

Greetings.

Received in central US in a little over a week after making payment. Drive is legit, came LibreDrive enabled, and I've already ripped a couple of Blu-rays without issue.

Hello, I wanted a new Pioneer 5.25" internal unit at a reasonable price for my budget, so I took a chance on the new old stock Pioneer BDR-S09XLT (as advertised). Communication with @levtrocki was very smooth throughout.

The online payment system issue was finally resolved, and I received the unit on August 22nd. It was well-packaged and came in the original manufacturer's box.

I’ve been away for a few days, but I’ve now been able to test it. I conducted the tests using:
- A UGREEN SATA/USB 3.0 adapter with a 12V/2A power supply.
- An ICY BOX IB-525-U3 external enclosure with a 12V/3A power supply. For the time being, it will remain installed in the ICY BOX.

In this short time, I’ve successfully copied six 4K UHD discs without any issues. All of them were recognized and copied on the first attempt. It runs perfectly and quietly.

I have satisfied my desire to own an internal 5.25” Pioneer unit.
Based on my experience, I recommend it.

i recently purchased 2 drives, 1x bdr-209bdk, and 1x bdr-s09xlt
both shipped very quickly, and arrived to canada in a few days. i opted to pay my own duties and fedex charged me about 40 bucks (CAD) for each drive
the 209 has been used already to rip about 150cd's, 30 blurays, and 6 uhd's with it, not a single issue

about to swap the s09 into the enclosure to test, but i'm sure it will be fine.

thank you!

BDR-209DBK, shipped to the US, FedEx, forced to pay an additional $80 tariff on top of the drive cost + shipping.

The drives sole purpose is ripping 4k discs, so far, the drive works just fine, if there's any way to tell if the drive is indeed new old stock, I'm listening.

Thank you

Hi rsaotome, thank you for the feedback and for confirming the drive is working well for your 4K rips!

Your mention of the FedEx tariff brings up an important topic that I want to address with everyone.

📢 Important Update for US Buyers Regarding Customs & Tariffs

Previously in this thread, we advised our US customers that choosing DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) was the best route because historically, none of our US buyers had been hit with customs fees.

Recently, we noticed a shift in FedEx’s customs enforcement. A small number of our US customers have been charged unexpected import tariffs, usually around $80 to $90. A surprise bill is never a good experience, and we deeply appreciate customers like rsaotome leaving honest reviews so future buyers aren't caught off guard. Transparency is incredibly important to us.

Despite this recent change, we still strongly recommend DDU over DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) for US orders. Here is why:
  • The odds are still highly in your favor: More than 95% of our US customers are still receiving their drives without being charged any extra customs fees.
  • It is mathematically cheaper: If you select prepaid DDP, the guaranteed upfront charge is typically around $150. Even in the unlucky event that FedEx flags your package under DDU, the ~$80 fee is still significantly lower than paying the DDP premium.
We have already updated our website's FAQ and the original post here to reflect this new reality. Please keep in mind that actual charges can vary, and the buyer ultimately remains responsible for them.

Thank you all for your patience, your business, and for helping keep this community informed!

This one is recommended. Most others don't allow flashing and are also only supposed to work with HDD. This one supports optical drives 100%.

I already used my adapter to flash my LG WH14NS40 to rip 4K Blu-Rays so who knows. I'll properly test the Pioneer drive (I forgot to mention I got the BDR-S09XLT) and connect it to my server after I come back from vacations
Is yours flashed to 211 / S11 for UHD? If not contact me. The Pioneers are not easy to flash with cheap USB->SATA adapters. Just to let you know.
No worries, the drive came preflashed with libredrive as the seller claims. At any rate, I finally hooked up the drive to my server and it works perfectly fine so turns out it really was the sata to usb adapter causing trouble!

I finally got around to testing my S09-XLT, ripped a blu-ray and two UHD disks no problem. It's super quiet compared to my slim drives.

Communication with the team at UHD Archive has been fantastic. Very quick to respond to any questions.

Shipping was was fast to the western US. The drive itself is cosmetically perfect in the original box.
The serial number on the outside of the drive matched what MakeMKV reported.
No flashing required.

100% would recommend this to anyone looking for a top tier UHD capable drive.

Just wanted to give my purchase feedback. I had a few questions about the different models that were answered quickly and ended up buying the 209dbk. It arrived quicker than expected and there weren't any additional custom fees once I received it. Installed unit into desktop tower and have been ripping Blu-ray and 4Ks with no problem. I had previously purchased a buffalo bdxl from B&H a couple of months ago and was extensively using that to rip. But I started running into problems with certain discs, either due to manf defects or scratches on disc, the buffalo bdxl would have issues occasionally. I wanted to get another drive just to have something different and ended up purchasing the pioneer. It has successfully ripped movies that the buffalo couldn't (but not all of them). Just glad I got couple of spare blu-ray drives now. I've already burnt through one dvd drive and the second DVD drive is getting really slow, but I finally managed to get through ripping my DVD collection. Long story short, I would highly recommend this seller!

I have purchased a drive and will update when it arrives. Looks like it was shipped out recently and will arrive to Canada by the end of the week which is quite fast.

I used the upfront option (DDP?) to hopefully cover the taxes/import tariffs. Never used that before but I assume FedEx did the calculations correctly on their end to ensure no payments will be needed at delivery. I believe for Canadians this is likely cheaper than the fees they would charge after the fact (broker fees for FedEx and other private couriers is usually as much as the tax itself or more).

My biggest concern is likely to be things I can maintenance myself (like dried out lubricant on moving internal parts, or replacing rubber tray belts). Otherwise I'm pretty confident I will be happy when it arrives.

I will update after receiving. Initially I was trying to source drives through Ebay but the amount of counterfeits/relabelled/rebadged drives are nearly impossible to filter out at this point. I found some encouraging listings from Japanese sellers, but of course then found many highly rated Japanese based sellers are also now selling drives with duplicate labels and serial numbers across multiple models, and they all claim they are "100% authentic". Seems there is no good way to ensure you aren't getting counterfeits on Ebay, so at least with this you can be sure you are receiving an authentic Pioneer drive.

Thumbs up on the purchase of Pioneer BDR-209DBK. I did have to pay a $50 Trump Tax on arrival. I was also confused because it didn't present the same model number in MakeMKV, but this is due to it already being flashed and ready for ripping. It tops at 4x and is very quiet. I'm happy with my purchase and their responsiveness to support requests.

I purchased a Pioneer BDR-S08XLT from UHD Archive, and after ripping more than 40 4K UHD discs, I can confidently say this has been one of the best upgrades I've made to my movie-ripping setup.

For context, I previously used an ASUS BW-16D1X-U external Blu-ray drive, flashed with LibreDrive-compatible firmware. It performed exceptionally well with DVDs and standard Blu-rays, ripping them quickly and reliably. However, 4K UHD discs were another story.

My ASUS/LG drive successfully ripped perhaps 60% of my UHD collection, and even some of those required multiple attempts. It struggled particularly with triple-layer (BD100) discs, frequently encountering hash-check errors and read failures, often around layer transitions. I also suspected thermal sensitivity, as the drive would sometimes require an overnight cooldown before I could successfully retry a problematic disc. On particularly difficult titles, I had to resort to creating backups and using MKVToolNix as a workaround. It became a frustrating and time-consuming process.

Enter the Pioneer BDR-S08XLT from UHD Archive. The difference has been remarkable.

I've now ripped more than 40 4K UHD movies, including numerous triple-layer discs, without a single read error or failed rip. More impressively, every disc that previously gave my ASUS/LG drive trouble has ripped successfully on the Pioneer on the very first attempt.

A few things that have particularly impressed me:
- Exceptional UHD reliability: Every 4K UHD disc I've tried has ripped successfully, including troublesome BD100 titles.
- No cooldown periods: I can rip multiple 4K movies back-to-back without worrying about the drive overheating or becoming unreliable.
- No workarounds necessary: I haven't needed to use the backup method or MKVToolNix to recover a problematic rip.
- Extremely quiet operation: The Pioneer is noticeably quieter than my previous ASUS/LG drive. The difference is substantial.
- Consistent performance: Maximum UHD read speeds peak at around 4X, with a typical 4K movie taking approximately 60 minutes to rip directly to MKV using MakeMKV. I'll gladly take that level of reliability over faster speeds and repeated failures.

Purchasing Experience - Excellent

I'm located in the United States and purchased directly through UHD Archive's website rather than eBay. I did not prepay VAT or import taxes.

My order arrived within just seven calendar days from Turkey, which was genuinely impressive.

The drive arrived in like-new condition. Despite being manufactured in 2013, there was no visible rust, corrosion, or damage to the external casing. The original retail box was intact, although some of the adhesive had weakened with age, exactly as the seller discloses on their website.

Given that UHD Archive prepares these older drives with UHD-compatible firmware before shipping, I expected some evidence of handling. Nevertheless, the drive looked excellent and has performed flawlessly.

Final Thoughts

I finally understand why there are so many passionate Pioneer enthusiasts in the UHD ripping community. These drives really are that good, particularly when it comes to reliably reading difficult 4K UHD Blu-ray discs.

After dealing with countless failed rips, repeated retries, cooldown periods, and complicated workarounds, having a drive that simply works every single time has been a game changer.

I highly recommend both UHD Archive as a seller and the Pioneer BDR-S08XLT to anyone serious about archiving a 4K UHD collection. The product condition, shipping experience, and most importantly, actual performance have exceeded my expectations.

And a special thank you to UHD Archive for sourcing, preparing, and bringing these new-old-stock Pioneer drives back to life. It's great to see such outstanding hardware being made available to enthusiasts who can genuinely appreciate it.

Absolutely worth the investment. Highly recommended!
