UHD-Just Looking to see if any of the smarter ones can comment

I have an internal LG WH16S60 1.02 which I flashed with MartyMcNutts purchased FW some years back and the drive has served me well, back up’d 600+ UHD disks with purchased MKV, no issues.

Then, out of the blue a few months ago, the internal LG decided it could no longer read UHD discs, BD, no problem.

I purchased a BD lens cleaner via Amazon Japan, did not make any difference, not blaming the lens cleaner.

So last week, I purchased an external BD-RE PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UD04.1PGDL266234WL in a Silverstone casing from MartyMcNutts and BTW, excellent service. Drive is connected via a USB hub and performs well, 4X reading UHD back up.…

BUT HERE IS THE INTERESTING “WEIRD” THING that I cannot “fkn” understand.

With the new external BD-RE PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UD04.1PGDL266234WL connect via USB, the internal LG WH16S60 1.02 can suddenly read a UHD disk and sometimes complete the back up or fail half way through.

If I unplug the USB connected BD-RE PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UD04.1PGDL266234WL, the internal LG WH16S60 1.02 fails period. (as before) and cannot read the UHD disk???

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?? I can add MB, Processer , Memory etc but I am not sure I that would help. OS is W10 Pro, I am sure that there are many smarter engineers out there who can offer suggestions / opinions.

Those lens cleaning discs are not very useful. Sounds like a possible PC power issue. Perhaps the PSU isn't powerful enough for your system? This can especially be true if you have a decent GPU in you PC. My PC has a RTX 4070 GPU and runs liquid cooling along with 6 fans and I use a 1050w PSU to ensure more than enough power. All of my optical drives are connected via USB ports direct from the motherboard plus multiple other USB devices.

For optical drives, if not using internal SATA connections, you should always use USB ports direct from the motherboard (not case ports) or an AC self-powered USB hub of at least 24w.

I don't think your WH16NS60 issue has anything to do with the external Pioneer drive being connected/not connected. More likely the blue laser is dying or really needs to be cleaned. Use an ear cleaner (q-tip) with some alcohol to clean the lasers and another to dry the lasers.

Also, with UHD discs, they almost always need to be cleaned before attempting to rip them as they often have an invisible layer of film on them from the manufacturing process. Usually a good wipe with a microfibre cloth does the trick but occasionally a disc may need a proper wash with soapy water then dry with a microfibre cloth and let it finish air drying overnight.

The most likely cause is some sort of filter driver from other software (in particular, drive emulators but anything dealing with drives at low-level - like various disc utilities - could be a possible cause). Try to identify anything you installed at the time things started going "weird" and try removing it.

Another option, go into Device Manager, find your LG drive, right-click on it and select Uninstall. Then right-click on any other device and select "Scan for Hardware Changes". This should re-detect (and reinstall) your LG drive, without any filter additions (though software using these may add them back later).

I usually access the drive via Device Manager rather than using Method 1.
