Hello all
I recently bought a BD- RE BU40N. I was sent BD-RE BU50N. I tried to save the money and order from over seas thinking amazon probably had the same one here already. Did not realize it till i was following a guide on how to flash it. I then noticed that i had a 50 not a 40. In the file that contains all the firmware i did not see any firmware for the BU50N. I have posted below my information. If there is another file with additional firmware and can point me to it that would be amazing. Or if i can use the 40 firmware and it will work. That would be awesome. Just wanted to get some advice. Thank again in advance. Please let me know if i need to give you an additional info.

Re: Help please flashing BD-RE BU50N
You can just cross-flash it directly to BU40N 1.00 (from my firmware pack in the SDFtool Flasher thread) as it does not have encrypted firmware.Mordaki21 wrote: Sun Sep 06, 2026 9:37 pm Hello all

Re: Help please flashing BD-RE BU50N
Thank you so much for response. First off your user name is Freaking fantastic!!. So i was able to flash it. Thanks for the files. Looks like that worked but i cannot get it to load a disc. I have had vlc pop up a couple times trying to play the movie. It gives me error messages. All the same from my regular blu ray drive. The aacs file data base. Was never to worry about that just wanted to back up my library. But its not opening like my old drive did and gives you the option to back up the movie. Not sure if it because i have the old drive connected. Don't know if that's the issue or I'm missing something with the new drive. its like the new drive is causing MKV to freeze up. Here is my info now. Again thanks so much for your quick and repones and time.

Re: Help please flashing BD-RE BU50N
UPDATE:
The cross-flash worked like charm. After doing The flash i had some other issues. All user error. Going to make a list to hopefully help someone like me in future.
1. I was using VLC on a pc i haven't used in a while. So i needed to update VLC. (all errors went away about not being able to read disc)
2. Using a enclosure for the drive with usb. The usb was connected to usb extension then connected to front of pc. kept disconnecting.
3 So for grins went into device manager and tried to update drivers. no new drivers. So uninstalled and restarted pc.
4 Pc restarted and auto reinstalled drivers. Still having issues. Then plugged the usb into the back of Pc into motherboard (should have done first)
5. Tried to play normal blu-ray. Worked like a charm. Then tested on a 4k. Worked also.
Thanks Again MartyMcNuts (Best name ever)

Re: Help please flashing BD-RE BU50N
So i needed to update VLC
You might want to know that VLC is not recommended for 4K Blu-rays. It has issues handling HDR correctly, and even if there's more-or-less a fix for that, sometimes you still have Dolby Atmos/TrueHD to deal with, and VLC will cause audio distortion in that case. Since you're using Windows, I would recommend the K-Lite Codec Pack with MPC-HC : https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm. You won't get the 4K Blu-ray menus, admittedly, but it is the only thing I have found (alongside mpv on Linux) that can handle 100% of the UHD/4K Blu-ray movies I own. Then tested on a 4k. Worked also.

Yeah, don't use case ports for an optical drive. Always use ports direct from the motherboard or an AC self-powered USB hub of at least 24w.Mordaki21 wrote: Mon Sep 07, 2026 12:53 pm UPDATE:
