5,25 fullsize new, ASUS TurboDrive BW-16D1X-U, the last unicorn?

Post by kraath »

Well I am looking for a new 5,25 drive that can run libredrive. The only option I found is this ASUS TurboDrive BW-16D1X-U. But it comes in an external case and does not say which drive is inside. I would like to take it out of the case and use in a normal PC tower. From reading here a bit I found the blank Asus were useable but I simpy can`t find them new at all. This USB cased one is simply the last 5,25 drive I can find. No others are left!
Can anyone confirm a 4K UHD libredrive able drive in that case?

there is also
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... u_ray.html
but honestly the slim lgs are better for reliability and durability but you get what you want
obviously the best is pioneer but they are almost impossible to get

they are both standard 5.25 drives once they are out of the case

Thanks but that is in the USA? I am located in Europe, Germany. So you would prefer a slim BU40N in an adapter over this Asus? What I mainly dislike is the tray and that you must put it in manually after eject. From the BU40N slim ones I got quite a lot :)

B&H ships (mostly) worldwide.

I agree with this, the LG/ASUS 5.25 drives are usually not worth the price according to many people. If you wish to get a 5.25 drive, you really should purchase a Pioneer drive. For example, skyrider is selling some right now : viewtopic.php?t=41303

You may want to check out the other forum sellers as well, of course.

If you'd like another LG slim drive, I can recommend this one (BRXL-PUS6U3B-TAA) : https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... e_usb.html

It's currently out-of-stock but B&H should have new units soon. It's actually pretty good for an LG-based drive, too. It's more-or-less just a BU40N with BN14 firmware, you will need to flash it for LibreDrive and UHD.

Thanks I trust the experts here then. I got a bigger amount of the Verbatim 43888/BU40N already ,also to sell. Will simply rip one out and get a 5,25 adapter kit then.
