Dirty Dancing - Can't backup!

Excuse me, I bump this thread, because this matter really bugs me.
I'd like to buy Red Heat and Angel Heart UHDs (US releases), but I read they both have screenpass.
The thing is, from the UHDs I have that supposedly have screenpass:
Dirty Dancing (AU)
Basic Instinct (US)
Kickboxer (US)
Universal Soldier (US)

only the first can't play properly.
What does that mean? Why is that?
So, I wonder if those couple I'd like to buy would play properly too.
I repeat, I want to play my discs on the fly, and not having to make mkv rips on my hard drive.

If you want to play them and not rip them, you'd be far better off buying an actual standalone UHD disc player and connect to to your TV.. Far better than wearing out your PC optical drive.

This is the MakeMKV forum. Since you are not using MakeMKV to rip your discs, you should probably ask your question elsewhere. Probably a forum for your player of choice?

Screen pass is no issue at all for MakeMKV when ripping.

Either you have a bad disc or your drive simply doesn't like that disc. It might sound silly but one drive will not read every disc. This is why most of us have multiple drives (I have 5 drives myself, 3 x Pioneer and 2 x LG drives) although I generally only use 2 of the Pioneer drives these days. If a disc doesn't read in one drive, it will in one of the others.

I've had my Universal Soldier UHD disc for a couple of years now and had no issues ripping it. I don't have any of the others you listed.

1. Clean the disc
2. Ensure the drive is always getting sufficient power by using ports directly from the motherboard (USB-C is best if possible otherwise USB 3+) or an AC powered USB hub of at least 24w. Do not use case ports.

Have you actually tried backing up the disc to a folder using MakeMKV?? I know you don't want to rip them but you may have to for this one to figure out what the problem is. Try doing a folder backup (2nd button from left) and if it fails, paste the log window text here.

I have backed up Dirty Dancing. I'm not asking about that one.
(though, I made an mkv of it, apparently makemkv couldn't do a 1:1 rip of the entire disc as is. You can see the error I had in first post of this thread)
I don't have any problem playing the other ones I listed that I own.

I just looked at the first post again. The drive was struggling to read the disc, meaning the disc is either dirty or bad and the drive ran out of power and momentarily lost connection. Ensure the drive is getting enough constant power, either by using USB-C or USB 3+ ports direct from the motherboard (do not use case ports) or use an AC self-powered USB hub of at least 24w.

Have you done a search on those titles? Did you find any threads about them or people having issues with them? You are pretty much on your own as far as direct disc playback goes as that is not what is generally done. 99.9% of people on this forum aren't interested in direct disc playback. We all rip our movies for hard drive / NAS storage and playback.

I don't know what NAS is, but I don't understand, do you all have infinite hard disc space?
I just have 8TB (sans the hard disc that Windows are in)

Anyway, I think I have some great news, about this specific title: Dirty Dancing
Searching, I found this player (mpv), that I wasn't aware of.
I spent 2-3 hours with AI trying to configure it, I integrated it into makemkv too, and it seems it plays the disc correctly, with correct colors and audio!
So, now I have an option!
I will probably watch the complete film tomorrow, and report back here.

I have ripped a 4K UHD of Red Heat (1988).

NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. They come in lots of shapes and sizes. It lets you shove a bunch of hard drives into a single box, smash them all together into a big volume and make it available on your local network as a network share.

It isn't infinite storage space, but one can easily get a lot of storage space. Unfortunately the frontier AI Labs are buying every computing resource the world can make, so hard drives (and everything else) have gotten expensive lately. If you've got the money, you can buy a single hard drive that'll hold 30TB of stuff. A common size for an 'entry level' NAS is one that can hold 4 disks. You usually set them up with a little redundancy so a single hard drive failure doesn't wipe out all your data. With four 30TB hard drives, a typical configuration would set aside a single drive for redundancy and provide about 90TB of space.

In the case of having four 8TB hard drives, you would end up with 24TB of space available, although these days you could just buy a 24TB hard drive.

Before AI stuff started sending prices through the roof, it was relatively inexpensive to have a lot of storage. Most people here just view an optical disc as a data delivery mechanism. The relevant parts are extracted and added to their pile of movies and TV shows to be enjoyed without the hassles of the disc. I buy lots of movies on blu-ray or UHD but I haven't watched directly from a disc in nearly a decade. Consequently I haven't had to sit through an FBI warning, an unskippable preview, or figure how to navigate an infuriating disc menu in nearly a decade.

Anyway, about Dirty Dancing:

It plays well (it didn't have any problem at the exact spot that it did other times) but, it stops at a certain point at 22 minutes or so.
I tried 3 players: VLC, Mpv and iToolShare Blu-ray Player, and it does it in all 3.
Maybe I have a defective disc eventually? I don't know.
I wiped it with a microfiber cloth multiple times, but the problem persists.
Someone at another forum suggested something like this, for discs with problems that freeze, etc.:

But I'd like to ask something:
I have made an mkv of this in the past (it's around 55.2 GBs), with makemkv.
If I had a defective disc, would the software be able to do the mkv as it did without problems?

Probably not. Are you sure the disc doesn't have any scratches or blemishes on it? Do you know anyone else that has a UHD compatible drive that can try to rip the disc for you? Then you will know if the disc is the problem.

Yes, I am sure that it doesn't have any visible defects.
I don't know any unfortunately. Maybe I should buy another drive at some point, as you've suggested.
I watched the mkv eventually that I had created, from the specific playlist, and it plays just fine! Strange.
VSO inspector produced all kinds of errors and I used Imgburn then, to verify the disc.
Again errors, and I think it was at the same spot that it shows in my first post: file 00509.m2ts

I'll try again now to rip the whole disc, although I'm almost sure how that will end up.

EDIT: Yeah, same error at the exact same file. (I see that file is the main movie with a size of 58.5GBs)
By the way, now that I checked the disc in Windows explorer, it seems like nothing is there:


I still can't understand how I managed to make an mkv using the correct playlist.

and again, I see at Windows explorer like nothing is there.

Out of curiosity, I decided to make an mkv again.
Unfortunately, I tried twice and makemkv presented me with errors! (you can see it in the txt file below. Do you know what it means?)

So, after much consideration, I've had it with this darn disc and decided to sell it to someone I know (for much less unfortunately that I got it). (funnily enough, I had sold him the previous UK edition that I had and also had problems due to this screen pass, but it didn't have problems with him. He has a standalone regular UHD player or playstation, something like that. I told him, if the disc presents any problem, he can return it).
There's no point in keeping this disc if I can't play it.
By the way, I was curious, since you all say you're making rips to your hard drive and don't watch discs anymore.
What if those hard drives fail at some point? You will start making rips again?

Anyway, hope this film gets released again in UHD next year for its 40th anniversary, without this protection.
I had problems with the initial UHD of Stand by Me too, which again had a weird protection, and then it got released again without it, and I didn't have any problem with that!

Sure sounds like a bad disc. You may have just been lucky the first time or perhaps it got blemished somehow after you created the MKV. As I said, MakeMKV has no issues with screen pass. That is not your issue with this disc.

Standalone players have it easier when reading the discs as they can buffer bits while watching and you likely wouldn't notice, whereas, a PC optical drive and MakeMKV must read the disc bit by bit, 1:1 perfectly otherwise it fails.

Are you certain your drive is getting enough power? One if the errors shown in the first post means the drive had trouble reading the disc and briefly lost connection due to insufficient power. You should use USB-C whenever possible and either use ports direct from the motherboard (not case ports) or an AC self-powered USB hub of at least 24w. If using a laptop, you should use an AC self-powered USB hub of at least 24w.

Hard drives generally last many years (easily 10+) and most people use RAID for redundancy in case a HDD fails. Just as much chance (if not higher) to have a disc get scratched or suffer from disc rot before a HDD fails.

Yes, on the off chance a HDD does fail and there's no backup HDD then we'd start ripping again.

It seems eventually, the disc itself has the problem!
I sold it to a person I know, as I mentioned earlier, and he tested it in 3 standalone players (not flashed drives for pc), and it presents problem at the same spot!
Now, although it's been a year since I got it sealed from ebay, I'll try sending an email to Via Vision, to see if they would be willing to send a replacement disc.
This same disc is being released again by them in a few days in a standard edition (losing the other 2 blu-rays of the previous limited edition), so it would be easy for them to send another disc. It's not like they don't have more pressed discs of this.
