Read error help please

#1 Post by Techoverload » Mon Aug 12, 2024 2:24 am

Trying to rip two DVD's my in-laws had made several years ago. They took/sent (not sure if it was local or a mail in service) a bunch of old family film movies and some photos from the 50-60s to a service. They got two DVD's back. As I know DVD's can have issues with degrading/stop working, especially non commercial "burned" discs I wanted to back them up onto a external hard drive. Am also planning on converting to MP4 so I can upload them as private videos to youtube. (Any suggestions on software to do that also accepted).

Anyways......one of the discs ripped fine. The other one gives constant errors at one spot.

Code: Select all

I have cleaned the disc and it doesn't appear to have any scratches etc. Have tried 4 times and it always fails with the same offset '1005598720'

Disc seems to play fine if I just watch it using the standard windows app.

Any suggestions?

It can play fine and still fail in MakeMKV. Certainly seems like the drive is having a problem reading that disk, i.e. hardware error causing MakeMKV to fail.

What I would do in this situation, is make an image of the disk (ignoring errors) and use VLC to play the ISO. That way you have a digital copy is some form. I do this under Linux with ddrescue. Note, for some disks this can take up to a week (!!) or more to complete. With a map file though, the copy can be halted and continued as needed. I see there is a windows version ddrescue-gui that can be purchased. I have not tried it. ImgBurn has an option to ignore read errors, it might also work. Again I haven't tried it. I've also found that makemkv can sometimes work on the image that's made. It still produces errors but gets past them to make a MKV. You may notice artifacts in the part of the video where the read errors are.

To do this successfully, I run makemkv first to open the disk. This puts the drive in Libredrive mode and "caches" the CSS key(s). Then I run the imager software without taking the disk out of the drive. If you start getting a lot of read errors right away, you are probably trying to read a drive without the CSS key loaded.

Since the disc still plays fine on a regular player, using an imaging tool like ImgBurn or ddrescue may help create a digital copy that fixes the error. You can try processing this image with MakeMKV, which may successfully extract the video despite the error

Since the read error always happens at exactly the same offset, I would also try the disc in a **different DVD drive** before doing too many more attempts with the current one.

Different optical drives can sometimes behave quite differently when dealing with an aging or marginally readable burned DVD. A disc may also appear to play normally because a video player can continue through a damaged section, while MakeMKV needs to read the underlying data much more consistently.

For irreplaceable family footage like this, I would probably use this order:

1. Try another DVD drive if one is available.
2. Create the best possible image of the original disc with ddrescue or another recovery tool.
3. Keep that image untouched as the archival copy.
4. Run MakeMKV or other processing tools against copies of the image instead of repeatedly reading the original DVD.
5. Only after recovering as much as possible, convert the resulting video to MP4.

Think of it a little like a brief glitch while playing Among Us: you might barely notice it during normal playback, but when software tries to read and verify every piece of data, that same tiny problem suddenly becomes important.

Since these are old family recordings, I would prioritize recovering the maximum amount of data first and worry about the final MKV/MP4 conversion afterwards.
