1. Use MakeMKV to backup the disc Decrypted
2. Use ffmpeg, dovi_tool, and mkvmerge to create a MKV with DoVi information intact.

The issue might be related to this warning I get from ffprobe at the 1m31s mark:

Code: Select all

[in#0 @ 0x2a4e1f40] Invalid Block Addition value 0x0 for unknown Block Addition Mapping type 68766345, name "Dolby Vision enhancement-layer HEVC configuration"
[in#0 @ 0x2a4e1f40] Unsupported encoding type
MakeMKV could be getting tripped up by this during the BL and EL interleaving.
So are the steps detailed above avoiding the error that makeMKV encounters when doing a straight rip and keeping the DV Profile 7 intact?

Another title with a similar issue was Lionsgate's UHD of The Ninth Gate. I ended up remuxing to use DV Profile 8. When I did a straight rip of that title it would fail but I was able to do a backup and then rip it, but playing back the rip from that method caused my players' video output to go blank with in the first couple of minutes of the movie. I ended up remuxing that rip to use DV Profile 8, but I'm assuming I lost the FEL data.

I was able to successfully rip KBTWHBA with your method and I watched the first few minutes last night with no video dropping.

So what worked for me on disc 2 was making a decrypted backup using MakeMKV and then creating the MKV from that backup using MKVToolNIX (GUI v100 on a Mac). Trying to use MakeMKV on the backup copy just stalled at the exact same place as attempting to rip the disc directly.

I had the same issue with the recent Lionsgate "The Arrival". I did NOT have this issue with "The Ninth Gate" copy I have.

I also successfully appended the two MKV's using MKVToolNIX

That is correct. The steps avoid using MakeMKV's BL & EL interleaver and uses dovi_tool interleaver instead (keeping the DV Profile 7 intact). The resulting mkv is what MakeMKV ideally would have produced; minus adding extracted DTS core audio tracks or adding force subtitle tracks (if any detected by MakeMKV). This workaround should work for any of these troublesome Lionsgate 2298 RPU frame releases.

Did you try the backup method first and then rip from the backup? That seems to be working for some folks.
Both with and without Decrypt on. I only tried disc 1, did not work either way, still stalls at exactly same place as ripping disc, 654MB

Edit: Just tried Disc 2, same.
On both disc's it would stick, but then in a minute or two it would move forward. I was able to successfully rip both discs this way. I would give a few minutes and see if that helps. I did find, that if you backup to an SSD and then rip to a second SSD, it the rip goes really fast... I mean really fast!!!

Thank you. Used this method to create a proper rip of the Ninth Gate as well. Though I had to map each audio track individually because the PCM track was causing problems but I finally figured it out.

I'm kind of new to MakeMKV as a movie ripping tool -just ripped my BR and UHD discs to play on a Dune Duo Movie 8K- and had the same problem as many on this thread have had with KB-THBA. It just stuck shortly after starting. I tried the 'BACK-UP' and then rip that file, which worked for getting DV, but it didn't include the chapter separations. OK, but not what I need.
So I went to the MakeMKV website to make sure I had the latest fw yesterday and it was down. Also down today.
Does Make MKV shut down temporarily when updating their fw or is something else going on??

Yes. Nothing I have can play that actual layer from an MKV anyway. The TVs show they are playing Dolby Vision, but they aren't actually playing the FEL layer.

Besides, I still have the ISOs of the rips, from Xreveal. So, I can always go back to it if I ever need to. And run MakeMKV on it.

The MKVToolNix file, created from the two MKV rips, still looked great in HDR10.

The only real downside is for titles that do FEL brightness expansion. Of course, if you need the trims for tone mapping on a display that's lower NIT than the content, then you lose that, too. But on a relatively high NIT display it's not a big loss these days. And this is not a super high NIT title.
