Yes, you just backup to a folder using MakeMKV (make sure to uncheck the decrypt checkbox for these ones!), delete the AACS folder in side of that folder that it will create, and then point MakeMKV at the BDMV file in that folder and it'll load up like any other disc and you can create MKVs from it like normal. Though it will probably be way faster than when you create MKVs from a disc.
Okay... made the back-up
Tried opening different .bmdv files (File > Open Files or File > Open DVD Manually), but then nothing happens.
I have tried:
/certificate/id.bdmv
/bdmv/MovieObj.bdmv
/bdmv/index.bdmv
Did you backup to a folder first? Or are you trying to do this from the disc itself? (I don't usually end up in the "open DVD manually" step is why I'm asking). I just go to open file, to the folder where the backup is, and then within that folder is a file called "BDMV" which I choose as the item to open and then it does (this "file" is actually a package that has various components inside of it, but on MacOS you have to right-click and choose "show package contents" in order for it to show the contents). I'm doing this on MacOS so its possible there are some slight differences if you're doing this on Windows or Linux, which I can't help with.
[Edit] Looking more closely I think your problem is that you're going to "Open DVD Manually." Don't do that. Just choose Open File and then select the file called "BDMV."

For anyone coming to this in the future. I ran into this EXACT same issue, my MakeMKV would error out/crash trying to process the BDMV files. I tried restarts, I tried moving the order of files, I tried everything with a .bdmv extension, as well as the dat file. NOTHING worked.
For me I had to roll back from the new MakeMKV 2.0 release. I rolled back to 1.18.3 (2026) and it worked flawlessly. You can get the older version here: https://www.makemkv.com/download/old/
I hope this helps someone. I do not know if there was something else going on but seeing this issue started cropping up in August which is when (if I remember) around the time 2.0.0 came out, it could be some people had upgraded and for some reason it broke this work around.
