Aspect ratio ok, but not full screen

Post by dhstraayer »

I haven't had this problem in the past. I switched from Fire Stick to Roku Ultra in order to use my collection of old dvds. But when I ripped "Lagaan", I got this result - black bars top, bottom, left and right! But notice that the captions are outside the picture. The problem shows both on the Roku and VLC. I'm using 18.3.

Well what's the aspect ratio / resolution of your screen? As far as I can see here, the movie itself is 2.35:1 and most DVD releases of it seem to be 16:9 (the "widest" you get for DVD or BD) letterbox. In other words, the frames / images themselves carry black bar at the top and the bottom, and when they are displayed on screen wider than 16:9, you'd get "black bar" at the left and the right additionally (unless you crop the frames or "zoom in").

This is just one example. Every DVD I've ripped with MakeMKV lately shows this problem. Notice the image I put in my post was from VLC, where I can set the aspect ratio of the "screen" anywhere I want. I can't avoid the downsizing of the image. In the past, I haven't seen this problem. But it's been some time since I used MakeMKV.

I don't see any image in your post though. Perhaps you need to upload it somewhere else and paste a link.

And at the end of the day, is your "screen" 16:9? And have you tested with movie that is 16:9 itself (and that the DVD is NOT 4:3 letterbox)?

P.S. I haven't remuxed DVD with MakeMKV for quite a while. Maybe I'll try one when I have time and see if I can reproduce the problem.

I've attached it again. This is what the mkv looks like. But when I use the $34 HDMI DVD player, the image is full screen.

Something seems to be wonky with image attachments. I used the "add files" on the "Attachments" tab, and it seemed to show on the "Preview" view, as an attachment. But when I access in the forum, I don't see reference to the attachment. https://drive.google.com/file/d/11kcmSU ... sp=sharing this should work.

That embedded link seems to be working fine. I don't know what is going with the normal attachments mechanism. Once again, when I play that same DVD on an HDMI DVD player, it projects fine --- full screen. And I used MakeMKV in the past and didn't see this issue.
