Verbatim 43888 won't read Bluerays after 2015

Post by Halinos » Tue Jun 23, 2026 2:59 pm

I have a Verbatim 43888 and I’ve already flashed it. So far I haven’t had any problems with Blu-rays, but once the discs are newer than 2015, the drive no longer reads them. Both Windows and MakeMKV show that there’s no disc in the drive. I’ve already connected the drive through a USB hub with external power, but I’m really at a loss. Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Better post the drive info as text, as the images seem to have problem showing up (at least for me).

Btw do you know if all the discs "newer than 2015" are BD50 (dual layer) and all otherwise are BD25 (single layer)? Are your collections all regular BD (i.e. non-UHD/4K)? Or by "newer than 2015" you really mean UHD BD?

The last Blu-ray it recognized was from 2015. Therefore, I came to that conclusion. But these are “normal” Blu-rays, not UHD. How can I tell whether they’re BD25 or BD50?

Well sometimes it is mentioned on the cover, but maybe it's a less common thing for western / Hollywood releases.

P.S. btw do you mean like the disc(s) that were recognized can still be recognized after attempting to read some newer discs, or do you mean like after such attempts not even the old discs can be recognized?

The old disks and also DVDs continue to play. I also had one newer Blu-ray from 2025 that worked as well. I get the impression that, despite using a USB hub, it could still be related to the power supply. The Verbatim 43888 has a label with V5/A3 on it. But I haven’t yet seen a USB hub that can provide that much power from a single port and also supports data transfer at the same time.

Well a USB-C port (non-PD) might provide 3A (and should at least provide 1.5A?). I don't know if the things (USB power negotiation whatsoever) work like that but if your computer has a USB-C port, you can try to get a USB-C to USB-A adapter and see if that works better than connecting the drive to a USB-A port on the computer. (If you have a data+power "Y-cable" and your computer has two USB-C ports, you may even try to get two C to A adapters...)

P.S. I don't know much about (the different variants / generations of) Verbatim 43888 but it seems that newer ones comes with a USB-C port. Is that the case of yours? Or does yours come with a USB mini/micro-B port? (And does it have a DC "barrel jack"?)

What's the capacity of that disc reported by MakeMKV / the OS?
