Hi guys! I'd like to be able to rip my 4k DVD's to my laptop, but I've read all this and the SDFtool Flasher forum post and still can't make heads or tails of it :'(

I have a Verbatim Ultra HD 4K External Slimline Blu-ray Writer and this is the information given on MakeMKV

Yep, simple.

Flash it to BU40N 1.03-MK. it is now UHD compatible with MakeMKV and Xreveal. If you use other UHD ripping software such as DVDFab then you can now flash it to BU40N 1.00.

My LG WP50NB40 should be arriving today. I don't yet know if it's an NB50 or NB52 revision.

I already have:

MakeMKV installed
SDFTool Flasher v1.3.6
"All You Need Firmware Pack"

What I'm specifically confused about is the correct initial firmware file to use, since there are two separate files in the pack:

DE_LG_BP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK.bin
DE_LG_WP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK.bin

Some posts say WP/BP50NB40 should go to BP50NB40-NB50-1.03MK first, while others imply matching the original WP50 model first.

Can someone clarify the currently recommended path for both scenarios?

If the drive is NB52:
Do I first flash to: DE_LG_BP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK.bin
OR
DE_LG_WP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK.bin

Then crossflash to: DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin?

If the drive is NB50:

Is crossflashing even necessary?
Or do I simply flash to one of the 1.03MK files and stop there?
And if so, which of the two 1.03MK files is the preferred/current recommendation?

Just trying to make sure I follow the cleanest/safest modern path before touching the drive. Thanks.

I successfully flashed mine using the BP firmware path instead of the WP firmware path.

Process was:

Flash to:

Everything completed successfully with no issues. Drive now reads UHD discs properly in MakeMKV.

Back in Feb off 25' I bought an LG BP60NB10 Drive off Amazon and have used it to backup most all of my Dvd's using Make MKV. It has gone great with a couple weird exceptions where it seems to would not read a normal DVD (but only happened 2-3 times). All the Blu-rays have been fine. I haven't done any of my 4KUHD discs because I don't own many, but I have decided to try and back them up too, so I found this guide.

From the first post, Make MKV shows to have MT1959 and shows me LibreDrive status is possible with patched firmware and says current firmware is 1.02 The drive is also manufactured in Nov 2024.That being said the part I question the is the details about SVC. It seems to say I need NB50+ in order to be able to flash the drive. On the back of my drive it shows SVC Code is NB12. Does that mean if I try and flash I will brick the drive?

why did you flash your drive like 8 times instead of the required 1 maybe 2 if your on linux

try the drive on another pc it should still work and fw looks fine

the big question is did you test this drive before flashing was it doa?

I am on Windows 7. Repeated flashes are for trying to get it working

Why try it on another PC. I don;t have another setup. I have an LG WH16NS40 and it works fine on this PC on the same SATA port and same SATA power.

The drive worked. It does not work now after flashing. It spins and tries to read the inserted media but cannot quite there.
In fact I got it working with the DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin but I am unable to reproduce my steps and it only worked at that point with Blu-RAY not 4K UHD

UHD pioneers do not need to be flashed at all
pre 12/22 non UHD pioneers need to be cross flashed as well but its a bit more complicated
for now only i can do 12/22+ pioneer flashing
well and a different company we dont speak of that probably stole it

1. Attach/power drive, insert blu ray disc (not UHD disc), verify windows 11 can read and play the disc – confirmed.
2. Eject disk, close tray, and open Make MKV 1.18.3 (w/paid registration)
3. Open SDFTool Flasher.exe (version 1.3.6)
4. Flash drive (normal mode) to:
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BP50NB40-NB50-1.03-NM00800-212005070917.bin
Successful: The Flasher tool now has red X by encryption and Libre shows up in MakeMKV.
5. Flash drive in recovery mode to enable UHD reading:
Choose recovery mode in the SDFTool Flasher (opens file-selection dialog)
Choose same BIN file after clicking on recovery mode as done in step 4
Choose below firmware to cross flash in recovery mode:
BP50NB40-NB40-1.00-Clean.bin
6. Hex error code presented. After this the drive will not operate. Tray will not eject. Drive gone. I’m requesting a replacement drive (probably 1 time only allowed) to make 2nd attempt.
I think I may have chosen the wrong firmware in step 5 but not sure as there are so many on different threads.
Did i go wrong on step 5 by choosing the wrong BIN file?

Bricked LG WP50NB40 drive - please treat me like I'm in 5th grade

Procedure:
1. Attach/power drive, insert blu ray disc (not UHD disc), verify windows 11 can read and play the disc – confirmed.
2. Eject disk, close tray, and open Make MKV 1.18.3 (w/paid registration)
3. Open SDFTool Flasher.exe (version 1.3.6)
4. Flash drive (normal mode) to:
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BP50NB40-NB50-1.03-NM00800-212005070917.bin
Successful: The Flasher tool now has red X by encryption and Libre shows up in MakeMKV.
5. Flash drive in recovery mode to enable UHD reading:
Choose recovery mode in the SDFTool Flasher (opens file-selection dialog)
Choose same BIN file after clicking on recovery mode as done in step 4
Choose below firmware to cross flash in recovery mode:
BP50NB40-NB40-1.00-Clean.bin

Very last firmware chosen (BP50NB40-NB40-1.00-Clean.bin) is incorrect.

See the 1st post of this thread for instructions specific to that drive. The 1st post of any thread is always the place to start.

Disconnect drive completely & reconnect (always after flashing). You could try flashing with the correct firmware.
