I'm having trouble with this drive. Most Blurays are failing to both back up or make mkvs. Some of them can play. I cleaned the discs multiple times and they look fine, no damage.
I decided to try ddrescue to see if anything else was going on, noticed If it pauses for a couple seconds it disconnects and I have to eject the disc and put it back in. Sometimes unplug and replug. Not sure if that's the issue with makemkv also.

Verbatim 43888 on linux not ripping
Re: Verbatim 43888 on linux not ripping
Most likely a power issue since these drives are very power hungry. Use an USB-C port at the rear of a desktop or a powered USB hub.librelibre wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2026 5:08 amI'm having trouble with this drive. Re: Verbatim 43888 on linux not ripping
Seems a poorly planned drive, no external power, no y cable. Also finicky when it comes to cables. The cable it comes with is usb c to a, with an adapter to work with usb c. The adapter helped, but didn't solve the issue. Tried a certified usb c to c cable. Had to plug unplug and reboot a few times before it was able to read the drive. Didn't fix the issue.
Looked into a powered hub already for something else, it seems like they're not reliable and can cause damage. And a bit of a lottery, no real predictability with brand or price.
I'm seeing if I can order a drive with an external power brick. Hopefully that will be better. And hopefully it gets to me in good condition and not beat to hell.

In addition BU40N 1.0 is recommended for Linux insted of 1.03.librelibre wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2026 2:21 pmSeems a poorly planned drive, no external power, no y cable.
