Hello, I apologize in advance. This is my first time posting in a forum. I've tried to read and research old/past forums on issues ripping 4kUHD blu rays. I was able to succesfully rip Evil Dead Rise using this drive from ebay without any flashing:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/175851852304?_ ... 26.m162918
However when I tried to rip other 4k movies (dune 1 & 2, inglorious bastards, top gun, blade runner 2049), I could hear my disk driver trying to start up and mkv would show "loading" but eventually it would power off. After this i tried flashing the libre drive as mentioned in other forums, ive tried 1.0, 1.3 and various others with no luck. I also bought a powered usb hub from anker because i read that the usb port from my pc might not be outputting sufficient power to the drive. and still no luck. I have no idea what to do anymore. Is the driver I purchased just bad?
Thank you in advanced and again I apologize if this is not in the scope of this forum.

bu40n issues
Re: bu40n issues
It sorta sounds like the drive isn't getting enough power. Is there only a single USB-A connection? Is that the only power source? Drives powered by USB-A typically have a dual connector dongle since a single USB-A connection can't provide enough power in all instances.

Re: bu40n issues
I've read enough previous posts to fear that this is rehashing old ground, but maybe I have a new wrinkle on the "Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive" problem. The wrinkle is that I have three drives and all three work just fine on 1080p Bluray, but only one works on 4K UHD. I'm on Linux.
[SOLVED. Leaving the post up in case others run into this same issue. See the solution at the bottom of the post]
I have three BU40N drives, one bought a year ago as part of an Orico external Bluray burner drive, and two bought just in the last month as part of the mad rush to get a few more UHD compatible ripping drives. The two recent drives both reported this before flashing:
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: FR07
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware date: 2119-05-10 13:48
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 63
LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
After flashing 1.03MK firmware, all three now report identically (except for Serial numbers):
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: xxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware date: 2118-10-24 19:34
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 63
LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.03
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes
So far so good, but the problem is that:
1) only the year-ago "Orico external Bluray burner" drive will rip 4K UHD. The two purchased last month don't. But the Orico never fails and the two recents never succeed, on 4K UHD and with multiple attempts.
2) all three drives, new and old, rip ordinary 1080p Bluray just fine, and haven't failed on any attempt.
I've swapped drives and retried my test disks ("Star Trek Into Darkness 4K UHD" and "Star Trek Into Darkness Bluray", all 2016 releases) and the results are completely consistent. The Orico rips 4K UHD and the other two do not. But alll three rip Bluray.
I've tried power down/up, system reboot, and disk cleaning to no avail. The drives are in external SATA to USB housings with separate power and data inputs, and certainly have plenty of power during regular Bluray ripping. All three were flashed with the same 1.03MK firmware. All three have absolutely identical Drive Information and LibreDrive Information (except for the serial numbers).
Anybody have anything to suggest?
I feel lucky to have gotten at least working Bluray rippers out of the two most recent, so having already tampered with them to the point of flashing custom firmware I don't suppose I'll return them to China. But maybe they are counterfeits?
Attached please find the label from one of the two recent drives, that don't rip 4K, in case it means anything to anyone.

Here is the solution: I found a comment by u/MartyMcNuts on another thread, that suggested an LG BU40N drive with original FR07 firmware should be flashed directly to the "DE_LG_BU40N_1.00" firmware. In other words it needs the 1.00 firmware, not the 1.03MK firmware. I tried this and everything works now, my 2019 Hitachi/LG BU40N drives acquired from China just last month now process 4K UHD Blurays just fine. Leaving this post up in case others stumble across it looking for solutions to the same issue. Thanks Marty!

Re: bu40n issues
Try the drive connected directly to SATA in a desktop PC, power it off the PC's power supply.
I have a BU40N and was having the same symptoms : viewtopic.php?p=197289#p197289
...works fine connected via SATA, so the external slim enclosure is the issue - I'm guessing power is the root cause. Will try one of the recommended slim enclosures mentioned viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634
