Are there any UHD external drives rip capacity out of the box?

Post by wbtczn » Sun Mar 15, 2026 4:08 am

I get really confused and overwhelmed with all of the threads in this forum relating to UHD drives and all of the talk of flashing. Are there currently any external drives that are capable of ripping UHD discs out of the box? Most of my library is Blu Ray and I have been able to successfully rip most with my ASUS drive. I've got a handful of UHD discs I'd also like to rip to my library.

Generally speaking, no, unless you happen upon a Pioneer official UHD drive but these are as rare as hens teeth.

You can get drives that are pre-flashed from sellers on this forum and also some other places such as eBay.
Cheers :D

Thanks for the quick response!

Follow up question - is making a drive UHD capable just a flash step, or is specific hardware needed? And then a another follow up - if a drive is flashed to be UHD capable does that mean that it can, or cannot, handle standard Blu Ray?

I guess what I am wondering is -- should I flash my ASUS BW-16D1X-U (if it can be flashed?) or do I lose Blu Ray capabilities? Also, what is the risk that I booger up my capability to rip Blu Rays if I flash?

Another reason I am considering a second drive is that I have a handful of discs where a one or two files could not be ripped. I'm wondering if another drive would be able to rip them. No scratches, and I've tried wiping them with a DVD cloth, but to no avail.

Editing this post to remove the pic I had originally included. Sorry about that. I'm a newbie and didn't realize there were concerns with the space usage.

Sure email me that drive info section see below for email

For all others there is no need to post your makemkv drive info section publicly just email it to me directly

again plain text only the reason we ask you not to attach stuff is forum space is extremely limited and when it gets full it can break stuff and take the site down
