Extract audio during a full disc backup?

Post by joseluko » Tue Feb 24, 2026 4:39 pm

Hi everyone!

I would like to know if it is possible to extract the audio tracks when performing a full disc backup in MakeMKV.
Or is audio extraction only possible when creating MKV files from selected titles?

I prefer to create full disc backups because I like to keep the original menus and extra features. However, many discs include unnecessary audio languages and subtitle tracks that I do not need and would prefer not to keep.

It would also help reduce the final file size if there were a way to exclude certain audio and subtitle tracks during the full backup process.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Maybe DVDshrink would be a better tool for you then. Though it is quite old, and can't cope with some DVD copy protections.

The problem, I think, is the definition of "full disk backup".

Doing a backup is for when it's important to retain the entire disk. If you want to get rid of portions, that is where ripping individual tracks or episodes comes into play.

As an example, I can tell MakeMKV to extract JUST the English or JUST the Japanese audio from a disk, and select which subtitle tracks are important, by ripping the tracks themselves. It also allows me to toss out the advertising tracks many disks include.

Doing a backup says that all that fluff is important.
