Two New UHD Sets of LOTR Problems

I have attached two logs to this post around some issues I am receiving trying to make digital backups of Lord of the Rings (Theatrical and Extended). I have read through the forums that this is a known problematic UHD set. So I expected that I would run into issues, but in my first case, I was only able to rip one of the six discs.

I replaced the set through Amazon and was able to get 3 discs to rip out of the second set. But I am continuously getting errors despite my best efforts at cleaning the discs with dish soap and microfiber cloth As a side note, I have noticed a foggy haze on some of the discs despite wiping down very clean with microfiber or a sunglasses lense cloth. It takes awhile for that foggy haze to fully disappear.

Yes, the LotR boxset is notoriously bad. It also doesn't help your case that you are using a LG drive. Often people have had to replace the set multiple times to get all discs successfully ripped.

All you can do is continue to clean the discs and use a better drive (Pioneer) if you can.

I also saw something about how Pioneers bought in retail stores no longer can be flashed back to the firmware required to consistently rip or simply don't allow flashing of old firmware any further. So I was hesitant on purchasing a Pioneer, but it sounds like I need to.

You'll be hard pressed finding any Pioneer drives in retail stores, unless you look at the Verbatim 43887 (also sometimes the 43890) which usually contains a Pioneer BDR-UD03 that can be cross-flashed for UHD or the ASUS BW-16D1X-U and hope you get a unit with a Pioneer drive inside instead of a LG drive.

If you didn't already know, Pioneer ceased manufacturing optical drives back in 2024 and closed the Pioneer store in April 2025. Pretty much all existing stock around the world is gone.

Asmcom and Billycar11 have some Pioneer drives available. I've sold out of Pioneer models and only have the Verbatim 43887 (Pioneer BDR-UD03 cross-flashed to BDR-UD04 firmware for UHD compatibility) available.

Even with a Pioneer, there's still no guarantee you will get those LotR discs ripped! They are just the absolute worst quality UHD discs ever!
